O.T. Old Timer's Food.

Fresh black-eyed peas with snaps (the little pea pods that are too small to shell), cooked with a smoked ham hock; chopped red onion and tomato on top of the peas. Fried green tomatoes (fried in Crisco or lard). Corn bread with fresh-churned butter. Iced tea. Take a plate out on the screen porch, and listen to the katydids and watch the fireflies.

Yvsa,
My grandmother makes the exact same foods. Gotta get that Poke early in the year!!! My grandfather made a big mess of it at the wrong time of the year for me and my uncle when I was a kid. Most trips to the bathroom I ever made in one day! :D

Ripe yellow mayapples & paw-paws,

& persimons from under the tree ! :)

It's been years.

The beans were good for the second night in a row as well. Beano keeps them from being beef hearts tomorrow. ;) :D :p

Another old time thing is using preserves of any kind.

Like using jam or dried fruit in pies.

Raisin pie or mince meat pie kicks butt!!

The basic idea is make some kind of pie crust.
Fill it with nuts and hydrated dried fruits(hydrated with water , booze, or available frruit juices), perhaps suplimented with whatever fresh fruits or fruit juices are available--or already prepared jam or real mincemeat. If needed, cook the filling down, and perhaps add cornstarch or other stuff to thicken it. Add spices like cinnamon or allspice.

Dump that into the pie crust, maybe put some stuff like oatmeal, chopped nuts and sugar on top, and cook it.

Properly done, this is one of the most intensly flavored and tasty of deserts, especially if served with some sort of cream on top.

Drool.....

Pinto beans, or black-eyed peas, with ham hocks and corn bread. Beef/venison chili (start with Wick Fowler's 2-Alarm Chili mix if you don't like to create your own). My Mom's homemade spiced peach butter (like apple butter, but made with fresh peaches from Stonewall, TX) on hot, made from scratch biscuits. Those same peaches cut up with a bit of sugar sprinkled over them, served with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream. My Dad's beef stew. Homemade fried chicken, mashed potatos & cream gravy and fresh-baked pie (cherry, pecan, lemon icebox) at my Grandmother's house in San Antonio. sigh....
