O.T. Speaking of Bums! Rant, sorta long.

I believe we have the fattest beggars in the world.

I don't know I will take you to down town Atlanta if you come back to Blade and let you see so large beggars. Large and aggressive, makes going downtown a lot of fun for visitors to the nations third most dangerous city. Third assuming we reported our crime number correctly, the FBI hasn't finished there investigation yet.

People who bum just for the money make me sick. :barf:

That said, there are alot of broken people out there. Broken by society, and stripped of many of the supports that existed when communities were a bit smaller. It's hard to think that I don't owe them anything, when I'm so well off and they are struggling to survive at the fringe. Then again, America has pretty liveable fringes, compared with elsewhere in the world. Very, very few people utterly lack food and shelter here.

It's the new cultural mindset. "You owe me." I'm no saint, but when I was 19 I had been out on my own over a year and had squat. My rent was $80 per month and I was always behind. I lost my job at a local pizza parlor and couldn't find another one. I finally got a job at a Chevron station 3 miles from my room, and walked there every day, (didn't own my first car until I was 26.) Trouble was after starting you didn't get your first paycheck for 3 weeks. I was 6'7" and weighed about 185, i.e, skin and bones, and went almost a week without eating. As I'm sure many of you know, that REALLY changes your mindset, and quick. But it never occurred to me to beg for a dime. I finally broke down and sold an old 1887 silver dollar that had been in my family for years (worth about $20 at the time), to a thieving, cheating, corrupt coin dealer SOB for $3. That's all he would give me. Bought 2 loaves of bread and a jar of peanut butter and thought I was in heaven. I'm not complaining; what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I definitely got stronger and more humble at the same time.

Two years ago my son and his friend ran out of gas, and gave me a call. When I got there 1/2 hour later I found them hitting up strangers for "spare change." I was so angry that I made him give back the $ he had just bummed, and told him that I would whip his butt with a belt if I ever saw such a thing from him again. "Everybody does it" was the lame excuse I got. Why not? They see everyone else doing it.

When I was 16 and broke I would go on my own "bottle drives". A few hours of walking throught he neighborhood with a couple of paper bags going back and forth to the Safeway and I could make 8 or 10 bucks, which wasn't bad. No one thinks that way anymore.

If you want to hear about panhandlers from hell, ask Munk or myself about Pacific ave. in Santa Cruz. They have it down to an art in that town, and make the bums South of Market in San Francisco look almost tame.

This time of the year they break out their Santa hats to beg, and after 9/11 they all had American Flags. I also ran into a "will work for food" woman down at the bank, and offered her $20 to do less than an hour's yard work. Just like several of you have told. She told me she couldn't leave because her "friend" was expecting her there, and I asked her what kind of work she could do from a corner with a sign? Silence.

I don't know. Guess I am just getting to be from another era when everyone didn't just expect handouts for doing nothing!

Regards,

Norm

Svash,

I'm decidedly from the current era, but I couldn't agree more. When was the American dream of rugged individualism replaced by some collective monstrosity? Why do people think they have earned something when they've done nothing? You probably know that I'm one of the few people from this forum who displayed Kerry signs. But this is one thing on which I'm very old-school. Makes me mad.

To me, I don't think we should be angry at the rich for being that way. They probably had to work hard to get there. The poor don't deserve money for nothing. That perpetuates poverty and promotes a new, disgusting work ethic. Just look how well this worked for the USSR.

Maybe I'm more libertarian. I dunno. This sure is one thing in which I don't follow the Dems. Ya work for what you get. You get what you earn. Fair is fair. Maybe I'm overly naive, but I agree, Svash. This "you owe me" mentality is a very harmful thing for our society.

Kerry Married his.

there is nothing wrong with unrestrained capitalism except unrestrained capitalism, but there is no alternative forthcoming.

..after Svashtar's post

I once made it a month on a bag of beans.
It did not occur to me to panhandle.
Even the spoiled students I lived with in SC would not panhandle when we we were broke. I sang for my supper in a Mission but at least I sang.

I like the bums who get a little kitten or puppy for sympathy. "Don't help me; I'm just a worm, but please, think of my little kitty. She's so hungry. God bless." I always wonder what happens to the animal after it gets old and not so cute.

Three pounds of popcorn and a bottle of One-A-Day vits. for a month -waiting for that first paycheck from O.S.U. after all the $$ went to fix broken-down POS Renault on way to Columbus. In retrospect, the best of times. :)

Well maybe, if you think "hard work" is waiting for your rich parents to die so your trust fund is replaced by your inheritance.

Not at all, Ben; hard work is slitting their fat throats while the Rich sleep. I assume you and all your Comrades are up to this.

Good to have you back, Munk. You always provide a good opposition and that good ole' dry humor! :D So, what about the Brazos...? :)

By God; what's that munk done now? I told him slitting throats was thirsty work but didn't think he took me literally.

When I first saw Ed Know I had too check out his profile to see if I could get a hint as to whom it may be. Thought he might be a new troll but after a couple, three posts I had it figured out.  :p :D ;)

So Ed, ever been down on the Brazos?;)

Be right back after this break to take my duly prescribed medications.

That's a common scam here. I have a system. If they lie to me I still give them money, but if they say they are trying to get enough $$ for a bottle of booze I give the twice the normal amount cause they are being honest.

I grew up working at my father's print shop that was located in a "bad" part of town. I heard every scam out imaginable, three stand out.

1. When I was about 17 a guy stopped me. He said, "Buddy I am not gonna lie to you. I need a drink and if you will give me a dollar, I will go straight to that bar over there and have one!"

I thought, finally this is an honest man. I gave him a fiver and he headed straight to the bar. I wallked on feeling good until a second guy stopped me and said, "Buddy I am nnot gonna lie to you, I need a drink..." I thought, "Crap, the newest scam."

I pointed to the first guy just heading into to the bar and told the second guy, "I just gave him my last fiver, you might want to check with him." He ran across the street.

2. The second instance was when one of my employees came in with a two foot piece of 3/4 inch galvenized pipe.

I asked him what he was doing with that and an interesting story unfolded.

Buel was a medium small guy who liked to drink and play pool after work. The night before, he was heading for the pool hall (I was smart enough not to travel those streets on foot at night).

He was approached by a guy carrying that same pipe. He was gripping one end and quietly asked Buel if he would like to buy that pipe. Buel told him no, he had no need for the pipe.

The man meaningfully thumped the pipe into his other hand and said, "I need $25 for this pipe. I don't care how much other money you are carrying --- but I NEED $25 FOR THIS PIPE!"

Buel said, "I think that $25 for that pipe is a good price when you put it that way."

He handed over the $25 and the guy gave him the pipe. I asked Buel why, when he had the pipe, he didn't tell the guy to give him back the money. Buel said that he liked the guy's style.

He also suggested that I should always carry at least $25 because that was the minimum price for a "hit." If someone tried to rob me and they coudn't get that much money, they very likely might beat the crap out of me in their frustration about not getting enough for a hit.

3. A good friend was in a crowded bar. A very stoned woman approached him and pointed a small revolver at him. She said, "Give me $25." Conrad said, "I'll give you $25 for the gun." She said, "Ok," and handed over the gun. Conrad kept his bagrain and gave her $25.

Personally I don't give these panhandling bums anything. In Atlanta we have plenty of work available. I feel that giving them money is enabling them. If nobody paid, they would go find meaningful work.

Now I do carry a gun and I have a neat badge that looks exactly like a police badge. I would never pretend to be an officer of the law, but it is amazing how many potential panhandlers give my belt a quick glance and go the other way.

Bill, I don't know what that pic is, but if I had to go in there to apply for a job, I probably would just continue to be unemployed...
