I know this is a common thread, but what the heck.

I've heard often of quench oil grades, speed of quench, etc. What home quench works the best with O1 ? Some say cooking oils, motor oils, mineral oils and others mix up transmission fluid concoctions. Which is best for O1 and at what preheat temperature?

Thanks

KeithH,

I typically use hydraulic oil heated to 140 deg F and never had a problem. I heat to non magnetic and let air cool, heat to non magnetic again and let cool to cherry red (3X) then heat to non magnetic and quench. A 2 hour tempering cycle at 400 deg F followed by an overnight soak in dry ice. After the dry ice, 2 more 2 hour tempering cycles at 400 deg F.

thanks Onies, but one dumb question, is dry ice solid? I'm guessing that the dry ice is used as an oxygen free environment. Ill have to give it a try. But what to use as a heat source  hmm. P.S welcome to the forum, Fred
