O1 sweats during heat treat?

Well...I dont think it's water....
And I dont think it's some type of oil inside the steel...
It looks a lot like normal scale-blisters from over heating, but I have never seen so many pop up like this...

I guess I would want to ask some of you big-time knife makers the question , "If you wanted to make this effect on your knife, what would you do to get it?"

Could it be something inside the forge thats getting placed onto the blade well into the heating, like flux?

I have been able to get simmilar effects by using the MIG welder and making spot welds on 5160 (Stay away from the edge.) then forging the blade. Finish off the blade and etch. A pretty cool look. Some come out looking like chainsaw damascus.

It would be interesting for someone with a good furnace and the proper temperature measuring equipment to see if they can duplicate this with a piece of scape steel. I would guess that it would have to really HOT. Steven

Hahah. You cloudgazers (scalegazers?) are too much. Thanks tons for the experience and input. I'll pass it along to my associate with the recommendation that he start using a magnet instead. Next time we get him up to the shop we'll stick some in the furnace and see if we can replicate it at proper austenitizing temps.

Be well.

Jim,,,very interesting idea....
does the "spot" effect get down into the seel to a depth that would allow me to do the final sanding after the heat-treatments?

Yes it does. However I forge these blades and never tried it on flat stock then grind.

I had a peice of steel look similar to that, turns out i had some copper in my forge from an "experimant" gone wrong. I ended up making some copper plated mild steel.

To me, if so - soaking at too high a temperature. In which case, not good.

Are you still making wsks? If so what is the process or template you use?
