It's looking great!

My only tips would be to chamfer the holes a tiny bit before heat treat to prevent stress risers... not really a big deal but it helps.

Is the edge as thick as a dime or so?

Keep it up CM! I really like that grind, that swedge looks killer.

Your transition to new bar-stock gave you a huge leap forward.

You style and mine are way different, but you're getting better.

Keep in mind the pointy point on the bottom of the handle will be more comfortable if it is less pointy.

Keep in mind for the future - your makers mark-
Look up Laser engraving / trophy shop in the phone book
for $10 or so you can get a PERFECT black laser engraved logo.

Don't rush, have fun.
If it's not worth spending that $10 on, maybe that knife needs more time and work...

The edge is pretty thin, sharp as my mom's kitchen knives LOL. Could that present problems? Also, I don't have any bits for chamfering. I do have conical grinding stone bits for my dremel, will those work?

Hey CM,
It depends how sharp/dull your mom's kitchen knives are....but .020" is a good place to finish up pre heat treat as far as you edge goes. Some steels can go thinner before heat treat without warping, but .020" is safe for most. I wouldn't advise using conical grinding bits for chamfering. You'll get too much chatter and the countersink won't be clean at all. For just $8.95 at Home Depot you can get a 5/8" Ryobi HSS countersink bit and it will work for the vast majority of holes you use in knife making. A very small investment worth it's weight in gold for sure. Keep at it, I see some good improvement with this barstock instead of old files!

I try to leave them thicker on the edges, if it is thin it will ripple like a potato chip. (don't ask how I know :D ) I had to take back the edges on my first few knives to get them thick enough, it is no problem to fix right now.

I tried a dremel cone for chamfering and it worked ok but it wore out fast, I think a high speed steel one will be a cheaper over a couple of knives. I understand working with what you have though!

:D

EDIT : I use the same Ryobi Home Depot bits as JonnyMac, they are really great for the money, the dremel cone will do a poor job.

Huge improvement from your previous ones... Pretty hard to get a solid Hamon from O1 (I have yet to see a very defined temper line with O1). you can chamfer with a larger bit just go slow and lightly remove some of the material with a few sizes bigger bits. Or you can go to Home Depot.

That's called a chisel grind. As for why, I drew some inspiration from Emerson.

Significantly better than your last one. Nice execution, now get a bar of steel and get cranking on the next one!

This is going to be MOLLE compatible.

You are really improving, CM.... keep it up, man!

Wally Hayes is my good friend and mentor, if you have any questions about his vids, let me know.

"Premium" saltines........ well, la-ti-daaaa.... lol.

That actually looks like a real knife, CM....... very nice. I dig the sheath, too!

Did you blend the transition from the hollow grind to the flat grind? It looks different from the video to the new pics.

I love the handle!

Actually the transition was convex to flat... but yes, I blended it.
