It's the serial number. I do that for two reasons:

1. I have a lot of blades in different stages of the process all at one time, so having them numbered keeps me from getting them all confused.

2. I keep records of all the knives I've made. If someone thirty years from now finds one of my knives, they can tell me the serial number, and I can give them the details of the knife.

I just got one just like this from Phillip and it is awesome. Perfect size and balance to handle most anything in the woods.
