Now that the US is to get a new president , will there be any changes to your rights to bear arms or carry weapons . You dont want to go the way that the UK has gone.:)

Way too soon to tell, and most of our knife laws are state or municipal. Arms as meaning firearms are theoretically governed by the federal Constitution itself, which would need to be amended to change anything permanently. It has been a constant battle fighting back attempts to nibble away at the implementation of that right, though.

I can only speak for myself, but I do not take much comfort in the USSC's decision in the Heller case. This decision affirms the right to keep a handgun in the home for self-defense, subject to reasonable government restrictions. Ah, there's the rub! What is "reasonable"? California law now requires all new semiauto pistols sold after 2010 be equipped to "microstamp" shell casings and primers with the gun's serial number. My own state, Massachusetts, has such ornery restrictions that many brands of handguns do not meet the AG's requirements for approval for civilian use. Police and military are exempted, as always. If the "reasonable restrictions" become too costly to ultimately produce a profit, many manufacturers may simply abandon the civilian market altogether and concentrate on police/military sales. The same twisted logic could be applied to edged weapons, as is the case in the UK and other European nations right now. In these countries, you can keep just about any knife that you want at home but you cannot carry the vast majority of them in public. Getting caught doing so equals major legal problems.

I think Obama and the Democrats will re-enact the National Assault Rifle Ban. I also think that the taxes on ammunition will skyrocket, making ammo basically unaffordable for the average Joe (or average Pierre if we are speaking French).

The Dems could also put a tax on existing semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines, again making them unaffordable for the average Joe. The ownership paperwork could be made gruesome.

Imagine a $200 annual fee for a semi-auto rifle and another $200 annual fee for each and every large capacity magazine?

I think US gun owners are in for bad times.

He will do the dirty more competently than Clinton, as in make it stick rather than expire when his reign is over.
The days of the CCL, SLR, and gun-shows are over. Whispers of firearms law "reforms" will be heard in the first half year of his term I believe.

There is no way to know. However, if you ever wanted an AR15 get one now, also get a lifetime supply of ammo and extra mags. These are things you can sell later if nothing happens. If you wait until legislation is pending prices will be much higher.

There's another rub.

Heller addressed the meaning of the Second Amendment, this much most people know. But because the case originated in Washington, DC, the court's holding does not have binding effect on the states for most purposes. "Why is that," you might ask. "Isn't the Second Amendment (and the interpretation thereof) part of the Federal Constitution and binding on the entire country?"

Unfortunately, the answer is no, not exactly. The rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights are addressed to the Federal Government by design. Where an amendment gives a guarantee of a right, it only guarantees it against Federal infringement.

However, there is another amendment--one not found in the Bill of Rights--that shakes things up a bit. That is the Fourteenth Amendment, which has been used by the Supreme Court to "incorporate" various provisions of the Bill of Rights to the states. In other words, through the Fourteenth Amendment, many of the rights that we think of as Constitutional guarantees became secured to us against Federal and state interference. So far, the Second Amendment is not one of those incorporated rights.

Heller was a step in the right direction, don't get me wrong, but more must be done. This means Federal Courts (ideally the U.S. Supreme Court) finding that the Second Amendment is incorporated. My biggest concern with Obama's presidency and the overwhelmingly Democratic Congress is that Federal judges who are unfriendly to the idea of incorporating the Second Amendment will be appointed to the bench.

Be concerned NOW and do not wait until it is to late!

Make sure to join Knife Rights and the NRA. Write letters and let your voice be heard. Keep in mind, gun rights played a good part in the last few elections and given the current economy, the new administration may not have enough time (or funding) to fight the pro gun lobbyists. However, we must all be proactive.

At a guess , I would say that young Mr. Obama has enuff on his plate , what with two wars , an economic meltdown , and assorted other things . We are probably way down his priority list . He may not even get that far down his list in his first term , after that , we could be in pretty serious trouble .

I think Obama and the Democrats will re-enact the National Assault Rifle Ban.

And yet it was the Republicans who tried to do so last June. HR 6257, To reinstate the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act. Sponsored by Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, the Republican Congressman from the 10th District of Illinois. Co-sponsors: Rep. Michael Castle, Republican (DE), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Republican (FL), Rep. Mike Ferguson, Republican (NJ), and Rep. Christopher Shays, Republican (CT).

Don't worry about Obama and the Democrats. Worry about all of them.

I think it's unrealistic to think that either party are our friends , both would sell us out in a heartbeat if it furthered their agenda de jour .

Yes Obama may be busy but what about Biden? Wasn't he part of writing the original ban?

Obama and his peeps are actually more Stalinist than any of you seem to be willing to admit! All they are waiting for is any opportunity.......

My grandfather was forced out of Russia, when he could no longer stand up to the onslaught of the Bolsheviks. At least he had North America to flee to. Where will you flee when it comes here????

Most knife legislation will likely continue to be at the state and local levels. For example, last night the city council in Worcester, MA voted to ban the carrying of all knives with blades longer than 1 1/2". The ordinance would be an arrestable offense (lifetime criminal record with the Massachusetts Criminal History Systems Board) carrying a fine of $300. Some folks in attendance were worried that the ordinance would turn law-abiding citizens carrying SAKs penknives into instant criminals, so the proposed a 2 1/2" blade length instead. This covers ALL knives, even slip-joints. Police Chief Gary Gemme, who is a complete A-hole, embraced the proposed legislation with much enthusiasm. He has already suspended or revoked half of the gun licenses ever issued in the city, so he is certainly no friend of the armed citizen.

Yes...and it amazes me how many people just don't get it.

This is my great fear. Pretty soon we will be like Britain, where no knives can be carried or owned. Disgusting.

I got this from Obama's website www.change.gov

As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.
