Occasions when knives paid for themselves

Most of us buy knives so that they can endure a variety of tasks over a lifetime of chores, outdoor adventures and so on, but can you recall a single occasion where you thought your knife paid for itself by performing a single task, and anything else it was used for afterward was just extra?

Absolutely. 7 years ago, while driving home from a New Year's Eve ice diving trip, my dive buddy and I watched a Toyota Land Cruiser flip over during a snowstorm. I used my Spyderco Police to cut the seatbelt that was holding an 8 year old kid into the back seat of the inverted SUV (the seatbelt wasn't defective, just couldn't reach the buckle). About two minutes after we got him out and stabilized, another vehicle slid into the thankfully empty truck at about 40 mph. I shudder to think what would have happened to that kid if he was still in the truck when it got hit.

So yeah, the knife paid for itself and then some. I still carry it every day (as I have for the last almost 18 years).

I work as a graphic designer and travel a lot for work ending up in hotel rooms all over the place and setting up make-shift offices.

I won't go anywhere without my Leatherman. That thing has paid for itself about 100 times over. And I'm on my 5th one (I keep losing them to airport security).

Leatherman Wave has paid for itself over, and over, and over.... I have had several of them.

Olfa Silver is a small, steel, disposable blade knife that is awesome, they will pay for themselves in short order as well. Put it in your pocket next to your pen, and you will use it constantly.

Browning 814 was a fixed blade that just worked at a LOT of tasks. It was used to open the bung on a 55 gallon drum, chip at concrete, dig, throw, cut, etc. At 3 15/16" blade length, it was legal to carry in <4" states too.

Wenger 2 layer SAK made a great, versatile key fob.

Mora clippers pay for them selves very quickly.
It almost a crime when you buy them or Mora almost gives them away at there price.
