Ocelot materials?

Cool blade. Does the Ocelot have liners or is it a light weight knife? If it has liners, that one is going on my "must buy" list.

I don't see dual liners in this picture.

I love the design, and my proto should be here shortly, but I'm a bit curious to find out once I get to handle it. It's obviously got at the minimum, a partial liner or leaf for the compression lock, but it's hard to tell in the picture.

I loved the heft of the previous Wegner models, but if this one's lighter, that's ok with me. I really believe it'll be built nicely. My only concern is the pivot area. Do the washers ride up against G-10 on both sides?

I tried peeking around my Vesuvius to see how it's done on an FRN model, but couldn't tell much without tearing into it.

I'll know soon enough, but judging by that picture I'd say it doesn't have dual liners. If it in fact does and I'm just that dense or blind- hey, even better!

FRN is not the way to go, IMO.

Such a great design and the intended use (hunting) are demanding G10.
Better spend some more dollars than scrimp on the material...
Just a thought...

Reading back through the thread, I'm seeing a "custom" Ocelot with G-10 and BG-42 for $350 at the above web site, and reading of a true Spyderco production model with FRN and either VG-10, BG42, or S60V. BTW, I believe the "custom" Ocelot is a misnomer, since I don't think anyone at Blade-Tech grinds knife blades or shapes handles; more like limited edition production run of CNC milled/lasered parts. While the Ocelot is neat as heck, I look one below it at the above site and see a true custom by Boguszewski for $50 less. Hmmmm..... For the cost of the limited edition Ocelot you can get a large Sebenza.

Now I'll admit I'm totally taken in by the thought of a production Ocelot with BG-42 or VG-10 blade, until I see FRN. That gives me pause. I guess it depends on other things when you talk FRN, such as the lock, what the steel turns out to be, etc.... But as much as I like the limited edition run, for that much money I would get the Sebenza. Or a couple of Spyderco Lums. "One Lum or Two?" ;) Make mine 2 Lums. :D But that's just me, whining because I can't afford the limited edition Ocelot with green G10 and BG42. You know, sour grapes and all that. It looks like Spyderco already has produced both versions a couple of you mention. A high end for the snobs (very high end), and the standard for the rest.

It does have dual liners, but they are both nested. Talk about a work of art. I believe the production version will be FRN though.

Indeed it does have dual liners! #020 just showed up this afternoon- wow!

The liners, as shootist16 pointed out, are nicely nested into the G-10 slabs. It's relatively lightweight, but it feels super stout. The G-10 is very grippy, almost like grip tape. The little paw prints are cool (I think) but it's not even them that lend the super grippy feel, it's the highly textured G-10. Nice. Very smooth action, and the lockup is rock-solid as well. It's be a shame to lose such a nice feel if the knife was produced in FRN. I know, you can texture the plastic, but it just won't be the same. I'd love to see a production version of it built like the ultra-sweet Wegner Jr. with the G-10. Also, the pocket clip can be mounted four ways- either side of the knife, and tip up or tip down.

The only "issue" I have with this one is that the lettering on the blade where it says "Spyderco Prototype" and "020" is half rubbed off. It's not etched into the blade, looks like some kind of printing...picky, ain't I? Otherwise, I dig it, and really hope the green G-10 makes it into the production model.

Now, where can a guy score one of those neat-o fobby looking things?

PS- hey rockspyder- LOL! ;)

Hey Firebat...

I was the one with the "fob". Actually, it's just a zipper pull with a bit of green paracord to match. You get a pack of zipper pulls at Campmor or some other camping/hiking catalog for about $3 per 8. I use these on all my carry knives...pretty handy.

My .02; G-10, pass on the 440-V. Dunno anything about the other two steels mentioned, but I was somewhat underwhelmed with the 440-V on my Military. Still, the Ocelot looks to be a Wegner re-incarnated. Of all the "tactical" folders I've handled, the Wegner now in my pocket has pleased me the most. I'll probably buy an Ocelot whatever the materials are.

One other question; what will be the dimensions on the production version? It looks like those customs on the link above were of varying size. This knife, made to be between the large and small Wegners (with a 3"-3.25" blade) would be PERFECT for my needs.

I've been waiting for the Military Jr... forget that. To paraphrase my teen-ager (the last one, thank God!!! When she maturates, we're free!!!<G>)....

.."Wegner rules!"...

Hi Steve-

I know what you mean- the Wegner models are a couple of my all time favorites as well.

The Ocelot I have, and this is assuming of course that the production versions share the same basic dimensions, has a 3 1/4" blade.(I measured at the forward most point of handle to tip of blade) Bigger than the Jr., but smaller than the Sr.. Across the handle, it's 3/8"-pretty slim. Overall, it measures 7 1/2". The sweeping, almost exaggerated curves of the blade and the handle make it seem very slender and long, but it's a nice compromise between the old style Jr. and Sr. Wegner designs.

Instantly, now one of my personal favorites as well.
