Ocelot protypes

Awesome, but that is about what I would spend on 3-4 good knives. Guess I just have to wait for the production version:(

Neat looking, but I couldn't quite bring myself to spend that kind of $$$ on it either.

Let us know how you like it!

I'm not rich, but I love the design. I started to buy one at the Blade show, but the price tag scared me away. I regreted not buying one though. When another opportunity arose I took it. I love the Wegner designs and this is a piece of Spyderco history. The production models won't be made like this one.

I've always loved the Wegner design too, though I am partial to the Wegner Jr. I had no idea that any of these would be available. Let us hear about it when you get it.

You know that I'm a Wegner nut as well, but when you show a Boguszewski custom Pro Hunter for less money on the same page, and other choices like the Ti Boguszewski, and that red checkered model  , within a C-note or so, well, call me a custom snob (you certainly wouldn't be the first!), but I just don't get that excited over a pre-production knife.

Of course, I'm also not nearly as heartbroken over losing the pugs (aw, they're cute!) as I am about a PLASTIC Wegner. :barf:

Yep, I felt the same way. It's nice, but not "all that" for the $$$.

Working on trading into one of those Boguszewski Wegner-design models. Looks like a great design.

just in case anybody missed my post in the "ocelot materials" topic i wanted to restate my opinion :barf: FRN.

Wow! The Ocelot looks very cool. It's like a highly evolved version of the original Wegner.

There were a few things about the first Wegner design that I personally didn't like: opening hole too small, tip up carry, no choil, difficult to unlock, etc.. The Ocelot seems to solve all of these problems though.

About the price: {shrug} whatever floats your boat. If you're a big fan of a company or design, acquiring a prototype is like finding the holy grail. Plus, you're the first kid on the block to own a new toy if the model hasn't even been produced yet. I reckon BladeArt will sell out pretty quick.

I do prefer G-10 to FRN for sure, but I would feel stupid paying $350 if the production models were exactly the same.

The UPS guy just dropped it off! :D

I really like this knife. With the original Wegner design Tim Wegner designed a great feeling, tough as nails knife. With the Mouse he designed a knife that feels and works much better than it really is. He put these concepts together and developed a masterpiece. The Ocelot is very comfortable. This design is much more versatile than the original design. I can't wait for the production version.

I understand now why this costs so much. A true work of art. This was a very limited run, obviously anything mass produced would cost less. Also the putting the pugs into the g-10 isn't cheap. It also has dual nested liners. Truly an engineering marvel. I am impressed.

Would you recommend it at that price? How would it compare to say -- a small Sebenza as far as bang / buck?

That is a hard one to answer. I am really biased towards the Wegner designs. They just feel so good!

I think the fit and finish are superb. It is the perfect size for EDC. I like it better than a Sebenza, but I also realize that it probably won't hold its value like the Sebenza. Also I am not sure how being a limited run will affect its warranty in the future. If you use it hard and something happens, can they fix it? You know what excellent service there is for the Sebenza.

Most of us that got a proto won't use it at all.

I know that my prototype marked #003 will stay in the display except for cleaning and inspection for rust etc.

But #17 is in my pocket now. It has become my EDC. Replacing a Cuda EDC, BFC Native, a Camo SOCOM, among others in rotation. I don't abuse my EDC's, a carry a beater for that, but Tim at Blade-tech should make it good if it breaks under "normal" use.

I don't have any CRK's so I can't compare the two. But I REALLY LIKE THIS KNIFE. Not too big not too small. Designed for hard use but delicate enough for fine stuff.

Can't wait for the production ones to be available.

Dennis, I have a few questions concerning the Ocelot:
1. How would you compare the Ocelot with the Wegner Jr. concerning the strength and sturdiness?
For example, the Wegner Jr. has one liner, but the full steel spacer, and the Ocelot has two liners.
Of course, the compression lock should be more reliable.
The reason I ask this question: the Wegner Jr. is my EDC which is also a tactical one, whenever I don't carry the Chinook. Can one use the Ocelot as a tactical one?
2. the strength of the compression lock: is it the MBC lock (like Gunting's one) or only a heavy duty one?
Thanks.
Regards,

Franco

It doesn't have the heft of the Wegner jr, because it doesn't have a backspacer. It should be plenty strong with the compression lock. I am not sure of the exact rating on the lock, but I would think it would be right up there with the Gunting. I think it would do just as well as the jr for tactical carry. As a matter of fact it locks in my hand considerably better. Mr. Wegner has really refined the design.

Thanks, Dennis. Another question I forgot to ask, but still bothers me: both the Wegner sr. and jr. have a big ricasso, which means the additional security to fingers in the case of lock failure.
How is the situation with the Ocelot?

Franco
