ochsenkopf axe / ox head help

(didn't mean to quote myself, the site is acting funny on me...)

A while back Ernest told us cool stuff about the Dumstorfer axes...like this:

Ernest has actually had a custom one made for him by schmied right about there somewhere...a Real McCoy.
All this would be a good question for that smid, and some others he knows,i'd bet.

To make contact with a traditional Bavarian tool smid is no walk in the park I think though James Austin did do his apprenticeship in that area if I'm not wrong..

That's very true,Ernest...(that's Right,JA received his training somewhere about there...how i envy him that(and his talent,And his disciplined work-habits...).

M B jinxed me...now i'll run off at the mouth on philosophical issues...Yes,of Course no self-respecting tool-smid Anywhere would be easy to drag any info out of...

This is an issue with all the "knowledge bearers"(UNESCO term) anywhere:Their knowledge is not to be disrespected by requesting it of them casually and lightly...Most naturally and reasonably that is most offensive.
That knowledge must be Earned,by gestures of Respect,by say willingness to help with any and all dirty, thankless chore,by investing time and energy and everything else to Demonstrate how Greatly, what their experience constitutes,is valued...

It's actually a huge dilemma with many an endangered skill...The Masters are offended at the lackadaisical attitude of the young, which is rooted in ignorance;and that ignorance is impossible to start on fixing without some cooperation on the part of the knowledge bearer....:(

As a good friend used to tell summer tourists in a small logging town in UP where he grew up-sadly,he'd tell them(upon request for directions):"Sorry, but you can't get there from here...".

Right, because in fact I could easily google Bavarian werkzeug schmidt and make contact anytime.

Here in the EU structural mechanisms exist, (internships, funded apprenticeships...), that in theory could maintain this knowledge. Problem is the reality of an even a larger force that identifies these counter tendencies and quickly co-opts them to service profit. We can only keep up the death-by-a-thousand-cuts effort.
