October 2020 Buck of the Month - Released

...I’m going to have to seriously consider the direction Buck has recently been moving in, even more than I have been recently.

I’ve been a huge fan of Buck (hell, I took a break from my honeymoon to tour their factory) and have gone out of my way to promote them on social media on numerous occasions, but I have been pretty disappointed with some of the recent decisions. Even more disheartening was seeing John Foresman and Larry Oden stepping down from leadership of the Buck Collector’s Club, not to mention the departure of Mr. Cooper from Buck. :(

I'm not the most up to date or involved, but have always looked at Buck as a good company. Interesting to hear this. I'll definitely have to educate myself a little more. I appreciate reading all the different takes for sure.

I logged on to the site just as it was released. It's not my kind of Buck knife.

I'm still waiting for a headless 112.This is,without doubt,my favorite style of Buck knife.

The wait continues.LOL

If Buck "can't do the special projects knives anymore because the person in charge of that left", how is it Buck can do a BOTM, or a custom shop knife, for that matter, since he scheduled all special production, but not an additional run of a dealer's SFO?
No more runs of SK Blades Smoke Jumper or Shield 110LT SFO's, or C&C SFO's with 5160 blades, for example, until sometime in 2021 ... if the dealer is "lucky".

Something isn't right.
About two ... maybe three years ago we were told the section of the plant that produced the 300 series was being upgraded, and that was why all but the 301 and 303 were being "temporarily" dropped, with new domestic manufacture models being promised after the remodeling.
The 301 and 303 are getting kinda rare at the stores ... according to a recent email I received from Buck, rather than "soon" for the 301/303 to become available in the custom shop, it is now "never". Have the 301 and 303 been quietly discontinued as well?
No new 300 series knives. I've read here, that the section of the factory which formerly made the (domestic) 300 series knives is producing some other (not specified) knife/knives now.
Are all current production 300's offshore manufacture now?

What's next? Thanks to Walmart, the 877 production was moved from offshore to Idaho. (Remember? The "Standard" 877 with black handle slabs was made offshore. The white handle Walmart version/edition was made in Idaho. Walmart ordered enough of them to move production stateside.) That model was dropped with-in a couple years of coming to Idaho. Why? It was a good knife, capable of peeling the largest critters in North, Central, and South America, and more mundane camp chores. It is also comfortable to hold and use for long periods of time.

The 103 "Skinner" isn't stocked by any local retailers, including the nation-wide chains that are in town. Aside from the ever popular and best selling 110; 119; 120; and 124, it is "difficult" at best to find a Buck 110 series, for that matter.
A couple online retailers, but not many, show the 103. Has the 103 and/or any/all of the other 100 series (aside from the ever popular best selling 110; 119; 120; and 124) been discontinued?

Did someone buy Buck?

I’ve been chomping at the bit for a 102 in ebony and S30V for a bit over a year now. So many good Buck knives yet to be made!

Damn, sold out. Great knife for $130. My crappy Gmail notifications don't work. I'm gonna have to change my Buck alerts to Yahoo.

Wish Buck would say how hard they run their D2. Does anyone know; 60-61 like Dozier ot 57-59 like OKC?

First I had to stay over at work about 2 hours, we had a problem with one of our gas monitors just as I was pulling up to the gate to leave and then as I was on my way home I got called to back up a newer guy his first time on call out, another 1.75 hours. I just now checked and I never did get an email or any kind of message. WTH is going on at Buck? I’ve purchased several knives this year and the last three years is at least 40+ Buck knives maybe more. And I promote Buck at work, my family, friends and even strangers. This is a bit disheartening and yet confusing. I used to get offers and all kinds of emails.

I also thought this knife is a snub or direct in your face take that. Not classy at all. I wouldn’t have bought one. Truth is I much prefer the SK version and I’m very happy with the one I got from Stephen. I’m thinking I’ll be taking a break buying at least for a while to see how this pans out. I do hope they get things on track and the staffing they need to do the sfos and dealer exclusives.

I wonder if the ceracote is heavy enough to smooth out the surface of the blade. My SK one was a little rough. Like a corduroy road.

I've used 1000 grit sandpaper/polishing compound on guns with a Cerakote finish with good results. One thing to keep in mind is that if your Cerakote finish has a bit of a rough or orange peel look to it, it means that the surface wasn't prepped properly and it'll end up flaking on you eventually.

Mine from SK blades was uncoated and rough. I spent the time and smoothed it out. Speculation is that these BOM blades are extras from the SK blades version. I was wondering if the ceracote took care of the problem

Oh, gotcha. I misunderstood what you were asking, my bad.

I would expect the Cerakoted 104 to be smooth. The grind lines on my SK 104 are definitely visible, but they are shallow enough that they can't be felt even when I run my fingernail across it. Sounds like you might have got a one off. :/
