October BOTM bets and guesses

I have some micro mesh pads that go up to 12,000 grit. I'm going to hit the covers with those (they did a fantastic job on my GEC #74 in ironwood), and then throw my usual choice of wax on them (Johnson Paste Wax).

I got mine today. Nice knife. The finish could be improved tho. I'm going to try to give it a light rub with flitz and then Ren wax.
Blade is center, nice lock up, solid feeling knife. A little gritty but that will flush out.
Overall I like it 👍

That looks really nice!

The action on mine is a bit gritty, as well — but, hopefully, will smooth out over time.

Seems Buck wanted the satin finish. Not a failed attempt at high polish or anything. Im curious how the wax turns out though.

Kind of hard to explain and my pics didn't show it but there's some spots that seem a little dull and some areas that are smoother than others. I'm not complaining, still like the knife and think it's good looking, just think it could've been a tiny bit bettet.

I received my example yesterday. For those of you that describe a gritty action, does your knife not want to close all the way? My example seems to have a significant hitch often requiring the blade to be pushed to close.

I sure would have loved to have one of these. Pretty looking knife.
Too bad about the poor fit and finish that I see on some of the knives.
It shouldn't happen, Buck can do a lot better than that.

I think I saw 2 with gaps where the scale meets the bolster. One with a funky grind. I may of missed some others.
not excessive and a percentage of any will have issues. The good part. Send in to Buck and it will be resolved.

Mine had a pretty gritty spot in the action. I flooded the joint with mineral oil and just kept working the blade back and forth. I was amazed at all the black crud that came out, but it works.

No problem closing with mine. In the meantime, like Jsega51, I have used some mineral oil, and the action is much smoother.

i’ll get some pics posted tomorrow. The finish and fitting of scales is excellent on mine. The grain of the iron wood is straight, but exceptional with lots of contrast.

Overall, I am pleased with my knife. The blade is well centered and has a smooth action. I like the modified clip blade, but I think one is enough for my collection and I'll stick with drop point blades for any more 500s. After looking at my knife and all of the photos, I do have one comment. The BOTM may be a limited edition, but it is a production, not a custom, knife. The scales range from those with excellent figure and lots of contrast to those with almost no figure. Buying one sight unseen is a hit or miss event. This isn't really a criticism, just a reminder that for some things it's best to see what you are buying.

Buffing and Ren wax is what I did with mine, and it turned out great. The sprayed on finished that Buck used, and I believe it to be a polyurethane of sorts, and it takes to being smoothed and buffed out quite well. It doesn't take much effort.

I think I'll do the same, even though it will be a user. Nice heft, good size blade, yet not an anchor.

I dont think there is a sprayed on finish. They buff the bolsters and the scales ar the same time.
