So I'm seting a little challenge for myself for the month of October...
Using the bow drill method I will make a coal a day...repitition is the first step towards owning a skill so far I'm 4 coals for 4 days as of this morning (although they have all been with easy woods)... anybody want in?

Thats a tough one! Muscle effort, time and materials. I'll do one a week if that will help :D

Whatever you can give brother, lol....I figure I can get 7 coals off a given board , so 3-4 sets for a month ain't too bad.

So you are going to take a take a picture of each coal right? Don't forget to put the newspaper in the foreground so we know the actual date :D :D

I'm just being a wise guy. :)

Lets see some more. Coals are like bearded clams - you never get tired of seeing them :D :D

Here one from today...

BOWDRILL. The smoke clings to your hands for hours. Its the smell of SUCCESS, better then getting to second base!

LMAO....Nice pice there Ken, Got my 16th coal of the month today..Autumn olive board with a poplar spindle.. I also managed to harvest some silver birch..ITs good and wet so when it dries will see how that works

It's been raining here for the past 3 days but count me in... I've got a couple of boards laying around as well as spindles...

Hey RR, I think I mentioned it before, but it's a good idea to keep a log of each and every coal - types of wood, any particular problems, insights, experiments, weather problems, etc.

I did this with my first 500 hand drill coals, and it's a quick reference for wood combinations, etc. More than 500 would have been anal retentive, of course  .

Doc

Just joshin' ya... Great idea!

500?
Wow Doc..you just reminded me of why you Rock.... no that I needed reminding...Thats a great idea...I'll have to start that today.

Well I was able to start off the morning with my first coal, using maple as a spindle and cedar as my fireboard... Hopefully its the beginning of a good thing for me....:) Sorry no pics, kids have the camera..

Congrads..go hat's awesome..never used maple before myself....I'm at 17 or the month..hoping to hit 18 today

Thanks,

It's all that I have that's dry at the moment... May be a few days until I can try other woods...

I have silver birch, poplar, aspen, white cedar and sycamore all drying on my windowsill, but the weather has been very damp here... i noticed that the weather outside effects the wood even if you ar practicing indooors.
