Hello. Gotta question for the experts. I have a friend that is taking a whack at making knives. He is using a the stock removal method and is having a finish issue. Or at least its an issue we are seeing in the finish but could be a signof a bigger problem. The blades are satin finished very fine. Almost to a polish. But what we are seeing are small lines in the steel horizontal to the grind lines, so tip to tang. Very straight fine lines that look almost like tiny stress marks in the steel. Its a constant striped pattern you can see in the blade on the primary grind. The blade has machine satin flats so no lines are visible.

Has anyone seen something simlar? I am trying to get a picture of it but the lines are so fine i literally cant get them to show. Im trying to determine if this is a problem with his steel itself or the heat treat. Blade steel is d2. From who i dont know. Its so weird its like the blade has oil smeared on it and can only see it in certain light and angles. But no amount of cleaning removes the lines. He says the lines are visible right after grinding the primary bevel but they get less visible as he works up in grits.

D2 is not the best choice of taking to a polish.

Have him knock he finish back down to 400 and it will look great

I will pass this on, thanks. I think what he is concerned with is if its a problem other than cosmetic. I have been reading a lot of threads on it and much like many of topics it seems pretty polarizing. Some feeling its a sign of impure or poorly manufactured steel. While others say aside from the change in look its no performance change should be able to be witnessed. Some even going as far as saying we all probably have knives with it and they are probably stonewashed or bead blasted. Some have even stated they like the look of it especially in a a custom knife as it lends a unique look to what could otherwise be a plain looking blade. Basically I have done enough research to get myself into trouble so I am still trying to figure this all out. I think the concern is he doesnt want to try selling knives with this steel if its a problem. So far I havent noticed any issues with edge chipping or rolling but I dont use my knives particularly hard. Thanks everyone for your input. I realize its not anyones responsibility to look up information for me but having looked through many threads on a couple forums If anyone happens to remember a thread of noteworthiness it would be appreciated if I could be pointed in the right direction.

I did happen to find that page, but for some reason I managed to read everything besides the information I should have instantly found. I think i got side tracked by all the awesome things I was seeing an lost focus. But now that you gave me a link again I took another look and found exactly what I was trying to find. Thanks a lot for the help.

I've had that happen on 1084 a few times also. Very frustrating but, like AVigil said, take it down a few grits and it will look fine
