I know 1084 is a good steel, and it heat treats incredibly well, great for beginners and pros alike. I know O1 is fantastic when heat treated with a kiln and what not.

My question, is would o1 heat treated in a forge paying very close attention not to over heat it, be as good as 1084 heat treated in a forge? I know o1 in a forge would not be as good as o1 in a digitally controlled kiln.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? I only ask as I have quite a few bars of o1, and want to try my hand at a charcoal forge, also every time I order 1084 the bars are warped... =(

I would say the 1084 would be slightly better choice ( at least more reliable). It will be fully hardened with properly distributed alloying. The O-1 may have some deficiencies.

This is sort of the same as saying "My VW will do 65 nicely." My Trans-AM will do 90, but really needs a tune up and misses terribly." It will get up to 65 if I floor it, but shakes.
Yes, technically they will reach the same speed, so they are now equivalent,....... but not really. The VW is reliable, and the Trans-Am is iffy.
