A buddy of mine brought this to me. It's one of his. 1095 steel purchased from Jantz. The pattern appeared after HT and popped with an etch. Anyone seen this kind of thing in a monosteel before? It's new to me. He says it seems to have hardened up okay.

Yes but only in the pearlite of a hamon and never in martensite.

It is some form of alloy banding. It can get as bold as looking like wootz sometimes.

Actually, now that I think of it, I have an S7 blade out there the owner of decided to etch and it came out looking a lot like the one Warren just posted.

That's actually a cool look, is there a process to induce that purposefully?

Thanks all. He appreciated the info.

The guy he's making it for is very happy with it, so all is well that ends well ;)
