Odd question

i know that this may be an odd question, but I was curious how others are in regards to their edc and food.
Whether I'm carrying a pm2 or an xm18 or whatever I also have alcohol prep pads. I use my knife of the day a lot at work to cut a lot of different stuff. That said if me and some buddies go to lunch or my employer throws us an impromptu steak dinner at the plant; we get plastic utensilso_O.
So I'll pull out my edc "sanatize" the blade and commence eating. Same goes for peaches, apples and etc. I will take a prep pad out and clean .
Anyone else let their edc perform double duty but clean the blade in the field before touching food with it; or am I just a little OCD.

As far as I understand it, you can simply wipe down the blade with soap and water to the same effect. Bacteria won't stick to the surface of metal all that well unless it is very pitted. That said, yes typically I try to clean off my blades if I have been using them prior to eating that day. But given that I am a university student, typically I don't need it much for anything beyond food or opening boxes/bags at home or in the lab I work in- so I may some days go without actually using the knife prior to eating...So I won't in those cases.

I keep a knife in my toolbox at work for eating my lunch with. If I worked outdoors I would keep one in my lunchbox!
I also keep a fruit knife in my toolbox.

I just wipe it off with water or whatever I'm drinking and go. I've been eating sandwiches with dirty hands, cutting edibles with my EDC, and observing the "5 second rule" with dry food for years. May not be the smartest, but it hasn't killed me yet. If that's what takes me out after all I've lived through, I figure it was my time anyway

^^^. I actually think our bodies get a little (maybe a lot) stronger if we don't baby them too much. As a boy growing up and as an adult (?) out camping I've eaten many a bug and piece of dirt in and on my food. No big deal unless you've been cutting open packets of rat poison. ;) I generally just give the knife a wipe on my pant leg and I'm good to go (not, however, in a nice restaurant).

Our immune systems are capable of handling a great deal, but it's a good idea to give them a little help. Wiping the blade down with an alcohol pad is prudent, it does about as much as soap and water. Most of what I EDC for is food prep, so I keep a food-safe blade and an everything else blade. Honestly, it's a great excuse to carry multiple blades without sounding like a nutjob to most folks. I am much more careful with food safety now than I was in my youth--we didn't have multiply-resistant bacteria strains and most of the food I ate was relatively local as compared to the global village of today.

I think the alcohol pad is a safe bet.
I just wipe the blade on my pant leg as I try & remember the last thing I cut with it.

As many others seem to be, I am not particularly careful with my edc food prep. My day to day life doesn't often contain many "people germs" and instead my blades often cut things such as hay twine, and other animal related things. I figure that any contamination I'm gonna get from being outside around animals would've happened already. I use my blade for all sorts of food prep, and am usually more careful cleaning it afterwards than before food use.

DocT, you do, of course, mean the 101  (a flask of which should be in every survival kit-for emergencies only of course) ;)

I don't really worry about it. I actually worry more about chemicals than germs. If I get some antifreeze or brake fluid on there then I definitely clean it. I usually carry two knives and one of them is usually clean enough for food prep for me.

Best way to clean a EDC knife blade for cutting steak is spit on it then wipe it off on your jeans or whatever's available. If you chew Red Man it'll be totally sanitized.
Does skoal and Taylor's pride work too? Or just red man :D

Im pretty sure you can handle it but if you feel more comfortable and have the alcohol pads available then go for it. But if you ever get food poisoning, maaaaaaaybe its because you didn't exercise that defense mechanism.

OCD all the way baby. I am very particular with what I like and dont like. I always rinse my blade before and after food use. The reason being my area is high in humidity and stainless steel do get rust spots occasionally so I make sure every now and then put a drop of Tuff-Glide on the blade. I really want to get the Nano-Oil but my tuffglide is a 30 mL bottle and dont wanna have it go to waste so I use it till its gone.

I guess I would consider myself mild OCD. I am very organized and can be very specific/particular in certain aspects. Being organized helps me a ton in my daily life and would recommend it to all.

Yes, amen. Eating a sandwich with Brakleen all over your paws makes me think but my dad was a mechanic that lived through Agent Orange, is nearly 80 and somehow healthy so I fool myself with the genetics argument.
