Odd question

Some dirt will make you stronger, and some will make you weaker. Soil from uncontaminated ground is mostly good for you. Plastics, rubbers, synthetic fibers, most cleaners and adhesives, petroleum lubricants, synthetic fragrances, and more, are all bad for you. I always shake my head when (legitimately) tough guys disregard the dangers of chemical exposure. No, that stuff won't kill you, but it weakens you over the long term, and that's got fuckall to do with how tough you are or aren't. Yeah, our bodies were designed to power through dirt and shit. Go ahead and eat dirt off your knife. I do. But most low-level chronic exposure to polymers is estrogenic. Good luck being a tough guy after that.

For food related hygiene, I think a good design is balisong. The blade doesn’t contact the handle and hand during opening & closing, so it can be kept clean for food use. Or fold away after use until one gets to wash it.

With normal folders, I just wash them & wipe dry. Usually I have several, one of them should be clean to use immediately. Wash & dry after use.

I’ve been wondering for fixed blade users, what do they do with remnants on the blade coming in contact with sheath (in the sheath). Best would be 100% washed & dried before sheathing. However, there might be occasions where it’s not possible. Thoughts?

Yes that is what finally made me stop using a fixed during the one knife EDC for a month challenge. Use it at work to cut up trash, stick it in the sheath with all the chewy goodness on it, take it home and wash it and put it back in the sheath to use at lunch tommorrow . . . oh . . . wait . . .?

I drilled a hole in the fiber reinforced plastic sheath so I could rinse it out.

Finally I said F this and went back to carrying a good sized one hand opening folder e.g. Benchmade 710 etc. In a folder the blade doesn't touch the handle when clean or dirty and the blade stays quite a bit sharper because the FRN sheaths were dulling the edges on the fixed blades from the glass fiber in the nylon plastic. Leather sheath not washable.

Oh the woes of the knife dude.

OP is Mysophobic.

Dish soap and water every time I cut
something funky.

I don't tend to use my folders for food duties. When I do I usually just wipe the blade off with my shirt or rinse it with water(if I have access to it).

I try to keep my blades relatively clean. If I do something overtly grimy with one I tend to clean it the next opportunity I get(water and a towel).

What has being afraid of mys got to do with it ?
:)
And mys, I mean mice ( to use the old fashioned spelling) are good for you ! Just ask Richard Dreyffus in Never Cry Wolf.

I just keep a Wusthof steak knife in a kydex sheath attached to my LBE, so I don't have to worry about how much DU dust is on my XM18.

Maybe a new post will awaken this thread again: I often buy used, but high end, pocket knives for EDC. A perfect example would be my Wm Henry B10s. Since I'm going to carry and use them there's no sense buying new ones. Since I'm not aware of what the previous user did with the knives or what kind of disease the previous owner might have I always put the knife in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes then was it with hot soap and water then rub it down with oil. Is that process going to destroy the wooden scales on my knives? Is that the proper way to sanitize a pocket knife with wooden scales?

If I was you, I'd just take a big swig of whisky then lick the blade clean.

Unforuntaly I quit drinking 24 years ago so I don't even have a bottle in the house. Maybe I'll carry it with me to a cafe with a bar and ask the bartender to give a shot.

For me, i just remove my shoe and wipe it down on my sock. Lol.

Honestly, not afraid of some dirt. If ive cut nasty stuff then soap and water, but mainly just my pants, sleeve, or whatever looks cleaner. I carry a folder. Fixed get washed immediately after their usual hunt duties.

I like to play in the dirt, and the amount of things ive had in my mouth since i was a wee lad has probably helped my immune system. :)

Sorry for grossing you all out at the beginning there...or am i?
