I am new to knife making and picked up a General International Belt Sander & Grinder ( http://www.houseoftools.com/product.htm?pid=481732 ) from House of Tools. The thing is that it uses a 1-3/4'' x 31-7/8'' (45mm x 809mm) belt. I can't seem to find decent belts for this size, then the 60, 80, and 120 grits that House of Tools carries.

Does anyone know of a source of decent 1-3/4'' x 31-7/8'' belt, or should try and figure out a way to modify the grinder to accept a 32" belt? Anyone else use a General International for their knife grinding needs?

Yes I do plan to upgrade to a better machine in the future, but my funds are low at the moment and I figured this would get me into a good start.

can you modify it to allow the tensioner to tighten up on a 32" belt? what about adding a piece of innertube to the drive wheel to take up the slack?

I haven't tried a 32" without mods yet. I have been afraid to pull it apart to see what I could do with it.

Since I can only work outdoors I have been waiting for warmer weather to take a closer look. I was just wondering if anyone else has used one of these and had found a different source for belts.

I plan to get a few blades grinded out this summer so I have something I can work on this coming winter. Working with metal outdoors in -30 degree C weather isn't my idea of fun. :D

Call John Williams , at Klingsopre. They will make up any belt, in any size. There is no charge for custom sizes. You only pay by the sq. in. just like all other belts.
