Odd Ulster

Hi Charlie.

GEC has recently come out with a similar knife they call the Powderhorn with two blades based on their Toothpick. The main blade is a clip blade with long pull and it has a pen blade for it's second blade. I wonder where GEC got the idea for this new knife? I've ordered one with Primitive Bone Handles and should have it by Wednesday.

Thanks for posting the pictures of the subject knife. As always, an interesting thread.

When I first saw it I thought "Yukon". "Toothpick" must be Canuck for "Slimline Yukon" :D

I thought Yukon also Kerry, but when I post a conundrum I don't like to stack the deck.
It is definitely not a toothpick - wrong shape. The "shoulder" or inner bump is just a hint though, compared to the Cattaraugus.

"we now have two of these knives spotted! Story sound familiar, Roland??"
Yes, i think your thread there was titled "Easy Analysis" which was tonue-in-cheek. It involved a Schrade Cut. Co. single blade EO Jack which at first you thought was most likely a modified 2 blade because you had not seen or heard of a single blade one before. And so it seemed until Barry showed up to show us his example. The same senario seems to now be evolving here.
I find it amazing that for someone such as yourself who has been actively collecting and seeking out vintage knives by these USA manufacturers for many years, still finds that there are patterns you have never seen or heard of before, even in the old catalogues.
What else is 'out there' still to be re-discovered ?

Roland, There's plenty of old knives out there to be rediscovered. Here's one I've never seen and dream of finding one day. It's a Barrel Jack made by Empire for Shapleigh. With large and small Coping blades. A real odd ball. This is from an old Diamond Edge Catalog reprint. Barry

Is this knife legit ?
IMO,the blade belongs on that knife,like I belong dancing a ballet :D.Could it be,it was a proto,of a Frankenstein that never made production ?
Interesting thread & yeah, someone went berserk with the grinder!
-Vince :)

Barry I hope you find the only Shapleigh barrel knife left in the universe!:D
Vince, I hope they've solved the crotch problem on your Tutu!!
Willgoy, there are more pins in that knife than in my wife's sewing kit, 2 in each handle, 2 in the shield, 1 in the backspring, and one in each bolster for a total of 9!!
Admittedly, I had to zoom in to see them!

Thanks Charlie for posting the knife for me. I am glad to hear what others thought and for you to find the auction page that had the same pattern knife from the same maker, WOW!!!

It's interesting how we each respond to knives and things in general. When I first saw the knife I started with OK this is a rare one and thought that the knife was not touched except for use. I might go through life with rose colored glasses but I always think that a knife is on the money first and then look it over to see what it tells me. Just because I have never seen one like it before does not mean that it is not right or original. I have quiet a few knives from the Utica Factory Collection and 3 are Carved Pearl Congress knives with stepped bolsters, like on old Bokers'. Many that have seen the knives say WOW they are rare indeed, others say they are made up knives and never came out of the factory that way but are parts knives because they are not in any catalog. I guess it's how you look at life.

BTW, Charlie posted them for me beacuse I hate having to use an outside picture hosting site, again just me.

Thanks for all the posts about this knife and when I have the blade worked on I will again ask Charlie to post the finished product for me. Sometime in April.

Mike

You are welcome, Mike!

I'd like to give Brad (ptradeco) the credit for locating the image on the Voyles auction page. He went through a LOT of search results to find that sucker!!

Vince, I see pretty convincing evidence that this knife is rare, but legitimate. I have a verbal report of a third one that a friend no longer has. I'm also glad you have a sense of humor!!

That could very well be the only knife left like that one, with the long pull,or maybe it was a blade style they made less of,or chose to dis continue, with that long pull. The crescent nick version looks more natural of a blade for that handle,to me,anyhow.
Thanks for the thread Charlie ,and the information .
Mike, what does one do to that knife,to "work on it". Can that grinder mess actually be straightened out ?
Too much to know about these old ones. :o
-Vince

Vince, Mike's blade was down some, before the grinder hit it. Someone with a sensitive touch can get the finish even, and make the edge a little more sensible.
Some say leave it, in fact I have said that, but here I think you have to do something. You can see it started out the same as the auction knife, with a traditional shape. You kind of have to imagine the missing steel. Not easy.

I have a repair guy that I use in these cases where a knife needs somthing to be done to make it more presentable. He is so good at what he does that he thinks he could bring the blade back to something nicer that what it looks like now. I HATE to have knives worked on for any reason and in the 200 knives that I own I have about 5 that have had some work done on them. This knife and others I think are the exception to my thoughts about never having a knife restored.

Mike :thumbup:on the restoration for this one.

The second knife that was found was said to have Rams Horn scales. Does this check with yours? That would explain some shrinkage over composite. Look forward to seeing after the work.
