There are definitely trends and fashion among knife makers, and i think if your aesthetics are not in line with those trends then it all looks very derivative. You need to have humility and self awareness to admit when what other people are doing doesn't work for you.
I don't like damascus or bowies, so all damascus bowies look pretty derivative to me. The original comment seems like something said by someone who's not into the current fashion.

Yup..... I'm happily out of date, old fashioned, and Not interested in today's trends. Or fads, that are some people.
