Oddball Knives?

I'd like to make a couple hook knives, for carving spoons. Also, I'd like to make a froe. That's a summer project for me.

Carved this with that little flex cut for my wife's Christmas present. If like to make a couple knives like that for my own use, but set just how I want them rather than as purchased. I'd like to make a whole set of carving knives.

Very nice spoon! Fun to carve for sure.

Do you stock remove, or forge? The only way I can think of to get the curve is to beat the blade around something. Others probably have better ideas.

Have you ever used a hook knife though? I find that small gouges (which I definitely plan to make out of scrap. Palm tools rock) work much better in reality. Hook knives are limited by their radius. Make a tighter radius to make a more versatile knife.

I wouldn't discourage you from trying one though. Just make sure that you put the bevel on the correct side for your dominant hand.

Stock remove. I doubt very much I will use spoon knives. I like the way gouges remove material much better. I might make some dedicated straight carving knives from some leftover 52100 I have. I have very little creative ability for carving figures though, so they might be pointless.

The wood for that spoon is from the rough cut walnut slab behind it. From my boyhood home, cut down and slabbed 18-20 years ago. All hand/non powered except for cutting the blank. I couldn't find any blades for my coping saw, so I used the band saw.

Not to detail the thread any further, strig, if you have suggestions on gouges can you email me?
