Odyssey 181U?

Well, I finally broke down and got myself a folder yesterday. I really prefer fixed blade knives, but they are bulky to carry, and tend to intimidate people somewhat.

Either way, I walked in to my local retailler, and saw an Odyssey. Looked good, had ATS-34 blade, partially serrated, and felt good in my hand. Basically, it had all the features I wanted (liner lock, combo blade (also a first for me), etc). In addition, it was 15% off (last one they had), so I grabbed it.

After getting back home (and playing with it most of the evening yesterday), I decided to do a little research on it. It's obviously an Odyssey I (plastic spacer, single liner). The only thing that's real weird is that it's labeled as being a 181U. According to everything I read, it should have been a 181FX/FL. What the heck is the U for?

Is it superior/inferior/an oddity

?

The website doesn't seem to mention anything about this. If it makes any difference, I'm located in Canada. Going through the Bladeforums search function shows one other person asking what the U is, but getting no answer...

Thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance,

The U represents the "year code", meaning the year that the knife was manufactured. All Buck Knives manufactured from 1986 forward have a year mark after the model number on the knife's stamp. The "U" is the code for a 1998 manufactured knife. The 181FX/FL.

Well, that was too easy. Guess I really should have known!

Thanks for the reply,
