Hi All,

My company manufactures very high end, utilitarian outdoor furniture and I want to begin adding some accessories to our range. Most notably, a variety of Chef's Knives, and then in time some steak knives, cutlery, BBQ tools and different knife blocks.

Whilst I am familiar with some of the better known brands, I thought this would be an ideal forum to discuss various OEM options for my needs, and do realise also that my Chef Knives, may indeed be made by a very different outfit to my BBQ tools etc.

Whom would you suggest I contact regarding this initiative. I am looking for something of the quality of say a Wusthof which will bear my companies name. Are there many German providers of OEM knives, Japanese alternatives? The numbers will be fairly low at least initially and I'd like some input regarding the handle style and design etc.

Any tips, ideas and or contacts would be most appreciated.

Cheers

How about Spyderco's kitchen knives?

Or maybe the knife series made down under by Furi ? Rachel Ray markets the plastic handled version. They also make an all metal series. Buddy of mine swears by them.

Thanks for the ideas guys... the closest I've found to the quality I am after, and who absolutely do OEM is Lamson & Goodnow from the states. I've emailed them and am awaiting a reply. cheers

Lamson & Goodnow is more likely to be geared towards large runs, but I could be wrong.

There minimum order is 200 units....which is not outrageous...I'll let you know though, and keep you posted on my progress.. cheers

Spyderco, have two of them, a chef's knife and a santokou, and they have been excellent for 10+ years. Very thin slicers, sharpen easily, and respond to steeling better than any of my other kitchen knives. I sharpen them once a year and steel after every use.

My Furii knives are well made, but they have much thicker edge geometry. They are absolutely not flexible and do not slice as well as the spyderco.

LamsonSharp is who first came to my mind.

There is also a small maker of kitchen knives in Ohio called Warther Cutlery. I don't know if they have the production capability to fulfill OEM contracts.

Ontario Cutlery?

Thanks for the feedback and input guys, I have emailed Lamson and am awaiting a reply...I looked at Sypderco they also look good!

For what it is worth, in the word of good quality kitchen cutlery knives like Wusthof or Zwilinge are not look at as high quality kitchen knives (safe for the Zwilinge Kramer knife series). You really should check out kitchenknivesforums.com and read a little around and check out their registered vendors. I did not use spyderco kitchen knives myself yet, but I would be careful expecting too much - simply before good quality outdoor/folding knife has little in common with good quality kitchen knife - at least for a user that can appreciate (and care for) one. I mean no disrespect to Spyderco here. Do avoid Shun knives - definitely not worth the money they cost.

It all also comes down to what kind of customer base your are looking at - people who want nice knives, but would probably damage high quality japanese blade and would not be able to sharpen them properly - there you do fine with Wusthof. But for customers that possibly include chefs and/or experienced users Wusthof will not cut it.

Thanks for the insights Matus, I have to say I am surprised. I'd always thought Wustof were pretty highly considered in comparison to your normal commercial Zwilling offerings. I also couldn't see many examples of a kitchen range on the Sypderco site. I have emailed both Lamson and the people at japanesechefsknife, although yet to receive a response from either. I am today writing to a Taiwanese company called www.silver-razor.com. Will update as I hear back.

Cheers
