After reading many posts here on the forums, I come to the conclusion that I am not alone with my attraction to knives, flashlights and watches (not to mention firearms).

Why is it that so many people who are knife afficionados are also attracted to good flashlights and good watches?

Is this a personality trait? Is it because these things go hand-in-hand?

This is my observation...anybody have any psychobabbel that they would like to add?

I too, enjoy the company of quality knives, flashlights, watches, and yes, firearms. I would hazard a guess that there is something compelling about well-crafted tools.

I prefer Maglites and Freestyle Shark watches. I wouldn't call either high end, but I do prefer them. As for fire sticks, I prefer Ruger and Marlin, mainly because they're in my price range, but also because they last forever.

Ditto here. I didn't know all of that went hand in hand. And I'll probably purchase my first firearm in winter.
:D

well, guns and knives for sure, Watches and Flashlights- Thats a big negative. I make do with a timex, and whatever flashlight makes a beam- I do have two maglights also.

It's probably safe to say most of us here enjoy quality gadgets. Other than knive I enjoy quality camera equipment, pellet rifles, etc. I'd have quality watches, but I can't afford so many different quality items. :) So it's either watches or knives, I'll stick with knives for now.

I've never been able to wear a watch so I guess I'm unique there. I break the crystals on them or scratch them up so bad they look unsightly. I'm just too busy with my hands most of the time I guess. Maybe I'll try a pocket watch one day but it will have to be a self winder. I hate needing batteries.

As for knives. I have always had a passion for cutlery. I also grew up with a father that was a gun nut so I have my share of love and respect for the firearm as well. In my home state I'm licensed to carry so I've always got my fave gun and my fave knife on me at just about any given time.

Flashlights? I have an old miltary olive drab one that takes two D batteries. It has the pocket clip and the different colored lenses you can pop in and out. You know the one I mean. The L shaped one all us guys that grew up watching "COMBAT" starring the late Vic Morrow used to see all the time. Other than my small mag lite I carry in my camera case with my ammo and my cell phone that is the only light I've had for any length of time. It has served me well for so long I have never seen any need for another to replace it.

I believe it's the knowledge that quality tools are better.

If you find someone with a high quality knife you'll tend to find someone with a high quality pen, flashlight, wrist watch, cell phone, handgun, holster, belt, clothes, cars, homes etc. Of course we know high quality doesn't necessarily translate into higher prices, although typically it does.

I suspect it's also an appreciation of fine tools to get a job done. For me it's been a life long appreciation of COOL STUFF though...I've been flashlight, knife, fishing gear, gun, car, motorcycle, and airplane junkie for a LONG time...since I was 5 or 6 years old. I suspect it's has just been growing up wanting a cool knife, flashlight, gun or what have you that has caused me to really appreciate and seek out fine gear.

I just found a place that has Freestyle watches for $10 ea. Nice outdoor/summer watch.
I bought a bunch of them and gave them to my mom and nephews.
Nice watches, light, large displays, plenty of features, 100m WR, 10yr warranty, not bad for $10.
I bought the CX4/5 and the Flow series mostly.

Interesting.

I'm sitting here at the computer with my Spyderco G-10 Police and my Citizen Calibre 5700 chronograph (black dial, two-tone of course), and I'm thinking that you might be on to something.

I'm not sure about the flash-light and the firearms (although I do have several of both), but I think that every man should have a nice watch and a nice knife at the very least.

Allen.

You left out pens. ;)
Knives, watches, and flashlights are things that many of us use in our day-to-day lives. They are the tools of daily life, or, at least they make daily life a little easier. My all time favorite gun....the H&R single shot.

I always have a knife, pen, watch, and light on me.

I understand what you're saying. I've always liked (among other things) knives, flashlights and watches. When I found this forum I found that a bunch of the people here liked these things too. Wow, I'm not alone nor am I wierd (as my wife thought :D ).

There are allowances for different personalities, but generally the interests seem to be universal.

So, yeah. Is it a personality trait? Or what. I guess I don't care, as long as I know I'm not lonely and strange. :D :D orami?

That's a coincidence I have the same exact things, but I also would add that as a member of the candlepower forums I have had a very bad addiction to flashlights. My wife always used to ask me why I needed all those flashlights.
I could never give a good reason - I would mumble something about power outages.

I am much better now - I haven't bought a flashlight in over a month - too bad I found this forum because I dread the day she says "Why do you need all those knives?" I'm not sure how I should respond. :(

My hunting buddy and I exchange knives and flashlights all the time...His wife calls it "queer for flashlights" but admits that her dad is the same way.

Lighter or any fire starting device goes hand in hand with knives, watches flashlights and pen, too. :) I feel uneasy when I am out withont any of them.

I always like to post this pic.
I just don't have a flashlight in it, but have the same attraction to them as most of you on the board.
We are not alone.
