of knives, flashlights and watches

More often than not, a knife junky will also be a flashlight junky. They don't have to be the highest dollar offerings from Surefire to qualify, as more than one light could mean you are a flashlight junky!!

I think it all boils down to not being content living life like a sheep. Quality tools make life more interesting. And people who care about their possesions and the things they do are more interesting to me. Passion is what makes life worth living.

Chameleon,

Just add a Pelikan Sovereign, and a Surefire C2 with the turbo reflector to that pic, and it'd sum up all my hobbies (addictions)!
The saying about the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys is true, at least my wife says so.
I say, I've reached a place in my life that I can afford some of the toys I want, so get over it...And the Blade Show is just over a week away!

After reading many posts here on the forums, I come to the conclusion that I am not alone with my attraction to knives, flashlights and watches (not to mention firearms).

Why is it that so many people who are knife afficionados are also attracted to good flashlights and good watches?

Is this a personality trait? Is it because these things go hand-in-hand?

This is my observation...anybody have any psychobabbel that they would like to add?

Whatever the trait might be, I have it and enjoy a number of all four items mention. My wify calls me "crazy". :D

Knives, guns and flashlights are all about power, and controlling your environment.

They are, at their most basic, tools that allow you to manipulate any environment to your advantage. They give you leverage to directly and positively influence a variety of situations, real or imagined. Most who appreciate these items tend towards self reliance. A man with a gun, flashlight and knife is vastly better prepared for contingencies than one without those items.

Watches and pens are similar, but not as direct. More of an appreciation for detail and craftsmanship in small packages. Compact and personal, often considered a reflection of one's personality. Jewelry for men that tend towards the practical.

STR said "It has served me well for so long I have never seen any need for another to replace it."
I'd avoid any of the flashlight threads on this forum if you want to maintain that point of view :D

You say "Why do you need all those shoes?". :D

LOL!

Don't forget purses!

My wife is on the perpetual hunt for the elusive perfect purse.

Don't even get me started on the shoes.
You've heard of Emelda Marcos, right?

I think it speaks to a commitment to preparedness , an understanding of quality , and clinical OCD .

there is something about the appeciation of a fine tool that leads us the the appreciation of other fine tools...

i'm a little more into guns than knives (handguns mostly...H&K, Sig, S&W revolvers, ect) and i love a good flashlight (i've got a Surefire E2E and a Streamlight Ultrastinger in the house and a Surefire G2 and a 5D Mag in the car.

i can't stand watches though. just a personal thing. but i'm big into gadgets (ipod, cell phones, digital cameras, backpacking equipment, ect.).

i think i just like knowing that when i buy something i'll never have to buy it again and if the results are not good then it's me and not my equipment...

Guilty as charged, and let me tell you my wife thinks I'm a nut. I go thru infactuation periods, I switch between knives, watches, and flashlights. I'm currently into my EKC karambit, an Omega SMP, and I love my Eternalight. And althought I like my pistols, rifles etc. having kids makes it harder to admire them on a regular basis.

I am guilty of enjoying all of these thing's as well. My current EDC's are a Surefire L4, Casio G-Shock Waveceptor, Sig P239 and a Spyderco Native.

My wife would like all of your spouses contact info. She's decided to start a survivors support group for people who have to live with people like us.

Amazing- I thought I was the only who's crazy out there! Knives, guns, flashlights, watches- and pens! I always thought it was an appreciation for fine, precision, craftsmanship- something about incredible tolerances and precision machining that actually work and function flawlessly, whether handmade or high-end production. I thought it was just the German in me, but now I know it's more than that. Are all of you neat-freaks too?

On one hand it's our facination with things mechanical.(remember the old saying"runs like a Swiss watch"?).On the other hand it's Man Jewelry.Nice(fill in the blank) watch,See-camp .32acp,top quality (fill in the blank) knife,Sure-fire E2D flashlight, super deluxe pen, well you get the idea.tom. :)

The chronograph? NASA Certified? I had one for a short period, my friend has it now, and he's selling it to buy a Kimber.
