Of these two knives which would you choose?

get some staining or rust spots? maybe/probably. "RUST OUT"? not even close.

leave a 1095 blade outside in a monsoon for a week and you'll need ten minutes to get it back in use... People way overblow the rust issue on here.

Not only that but some rust spots wouldn't make it a less functional knife in a survival situation anyway. Just work the rust off the edge and go.

1095 is tougher, which matters in an all out survival situation. But no one does 440c like Entrek. You owe it to yourself to get one sometime.

Probably the TOPS. I'm a sucker for some good 1095 not to mention micarta scales. The tops would be stronger because of the full tang design.

440C is actually good steel when heat treated correctly. People see 440 and think low end steel but 440C is a good steel. Not near as tough as 1095 though so not as good for a survival knife.

Agreed. I hardly ever get rust spots and when I do I just rub them out with something abrasive and keep going. I say "meh" to rust.:D

I would look for a 3rd choice to be honest. If you want stainless get a better stainless and if you want carbon get a better design. Tops are known for having overly thick edges and that saber grind looks pretty low for a 1/4" thick knife. I would take a 10 dollar machete or a mora over these knives. They can do more knife things.

Why spend so much? There are a million heavy use knifes aroud 100 or less. Look at Esee, Becker, Condor, and others. They all make excellent knives that fit your needs.

I have looked at them. I can get both the entrek or the tops for about 100 new through a friend. He owns both and they have never been used and well cared for that's why I'm choosing one of these 2. I can get a 200$ blade for 100$ :)

Yeah okay, go ahead and do that with your high-carbon steel and get back to me.

Wow, tough question, but for TEOTWAWKI (or however its spelled), I wouldn't want either of them. 1/4" spine is too thick to easily do a lot of things I would envision needing a knife for in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. If I only get one knife, it will be a thinner blade. Don't get me wrong, I have 1/4" blades, and I really like them, I also have both 440C and 1095CV blades, they are both great knife steels when treated properly. Overall, they are among my favorite knives, but I wouldn't want them as my only knife.

I don't know why you're friend is selling them so cheap but that's probably something you'd want to understand. Maybe he just needs the cash but maybe he doesn't think much of the knives. And when it comes to knives and gear, a higher price doesn't always equate to better quality or functionality.

I wouldn't want a seven inch knife as my only one. Not good enough at smaller detail-oriented tasks, and not good enough at axe work to make up for it.

A 6 inch knife or thereabouts is jack of all trades, master of none. So, I think it makes a decent TEOTWAWKI knife if you're going to have only one tool.

??? Care to share some useful information then?

They are just saying that they wouldn't choose either of those in a teofw type situation. I wouldn't either, to be honest, but since you asked "out of these two" I answered based on which has the better steel in my opinion for an all out survival situation. I do really like the look of that Entrek Buffalo though. I could see myself getting one at some point.

Just out of curiosity...any reason why? Just trying to get into your head a little bit.

Why hasn't your friend used either of them? IF they are new, why would your friend be willing to eat $100+ just to sell it to you?

You can buy much better for $100 retail.
