I have made a little progress on this knife. The main guard section has been forged and profiled then shaped to the desired thickness. The piece that extends over the spine was forged after profiling. I heated with an OA torch
and shaped it over a round head bolt held in the vise.
I try do do all the finish work before I bend the guard.
The ferule is buff horn, black fiber spacer and NS.
I will forge and shape the other piece of the guard tomorrow and will add a pic
or two to this thread.
Fred
I have everything lined up for the bending. I'll do that in the morning when Bob comes. A test piece is called for here, I think.
Get the bend rite on the test piece then go for it on the guard.
The handle is buckeye burl. It has some pitting along the bottom that needs filled. Its such a nice piece of burl its worth the effort.
I'll post pictures of the guard bending tomorrow and we'll see how it fits.
Fred
The white pieces in the handle are ivory.
I clamped the OA torch in a wooden jawed vise, so I could have both hands available for bending. A third hand would have been welcome. It took a half a dozen fits to get it rite.
A couple of hours with the files tomorrow should smooth the lines out.
I'll heat blue the wrought iron fittings,
It fits really nice in the hand. Not cramped at all.
I'll post pics of the finished knife in the gallery the first of the week.
Thank you for your input, Fred
