Off The Wall!

Codger,
That's some awesome info. , Is that from an internal memo?

...... The sheathes were also different shades to match the handles.
Eric

Sheaths were an unexpected problem. Originally they intended to use the existing Sears El Cid sheaths, altered and dolled up Western style, but there was a color difference when paired with the matching sheaths for the folder. Re-oil finishing didn't make them match, so both were made anew and matching. It wasn't a problem until the request (demand) was made to box them in sets, as opposed to the original plan of seperate boxing for the Bowie and folder. Compare these with the El Cid sheaths from Sears. (search "Eagle" on the forum search). The later production knives were sold seperately after the glitches were worked out, and as Arnold has shown us, the BB166 blade was adapted to Delrin handle and birdshead pommel for a later Sears SFO.

Possibly. Who knows for sure? Maybe it will be documented in a book sometime in the future. We'll have to wait and see.

Then I'll put my order in for an advance copy right now.:D

This is the closest thing I have to an "off the wall" knife.

Nice Glenn! Is that real tortoise shell? Do you, or does anyone, know how to tell?

The pattern number (the #4) indicates that it is celluloid tortoise shell.

SO we have the cell dilemma. But I would rather take that chance to own some really stunning knives.

Worth the risk, don't you think?

I keep my cell knives to a minimum, but they are hard to resist! I wonder why no-one has invented a more stable substitute?

Well the newer stuff is supposed to be much more stable and less prone to " outgassing" than the previous version. Olbertz has claimed a 100 year guarantee for newer Bulldogs.
Here is an intersting article from 1991, if you are inclined to read it.....

I believe Case, and others, have also used casein, a milk byproduct, for fancy colored handles.

I have also heard of Corian being used, scroll about halfway down this page if you'd like to see some handle material. http://www.northcoastknives.com/northcoast_knives_Supplies.htm

Just as some information.

Just received these from a friend of Kevin Pipes at SMKW. He had the good fortune to have a good choice of the wall knives. A bit pricey, or I would have purchased more!
A 4 1/2" English jack w. sawcut bone, a 3 5/8" Cattle knife, and a 3 5/8" Moose.

I do surely wish I had been able to see that collection intact. The photos LT has shown us give a rough idea of the bredth of that collection. I am also glad that so many Schrade knife enthusiasts have gained posession of those knives and are willing to show them to us.

I don't think I have any wall knives (one never knows for sure, do they?), but I have a knife or two from the sample room. One is pristine with nary a mark or scuff. But as nice as it is, it's value greatly diminished when the seller cleaned off the tape, pencil marks, and all of the notes that were on and with it. It's entire reason for existing was erased. Another couple I was lucky enough to get before the seller got happy fingers and "restored" them. Their story is, in part at least, still in tact, they are still presentable within their context.

Those wall knives also had a story with them. And when the panels were stripped, when the knives were cleaned of their identifying marks and seperated from their provenance sheets, a lot of their true value was lost forever. Their context. Where they fit into the scheme of things.

I have found a picture of some knives "on the wall", and here it is along with a single documentation sheet. It is my understanding that each knife was so documented with it's own mugshot and rapsheet. Maybe you'll see one of your knives in this picture.

Is it possible to get a higher definition picture, Codger? I can't get any detail out of this one.

Here are three more, via Ebay. A 3 1/2" Sheepfoot jack,
A 3 5/8" jet propelled:D brass EO (I made the mistake of Flitzing it before I scanned it), and a super 4" stockman w. punch. For your viewing pleasure!
