Off to Collect Wood for Bow Drill Sets

We saw sign of Wild Turkeys around, and then spotted this. Scat, scattered as a turkey ran off. Not due to our presence, as the scat was dry and several hours old:

Nice posts Brian, so where is the lunatic with chainsaw? You did mean motorized didn't you? Ohwell keep the pics a coming. Pat

Hey Pat - the chainsaw (motorized) pics came out like crap, so they went into the recycle bin. Plus, I was the lunatic with the chainsaw mostly. ;) D

Nate, I am in love with Silky. She is truly the sweetest discovery I've made in a long, long time!

Orrey45,

That knife was a gift from the owners of TOPS. It's called the "Tactical Toothpick." I don't think it's ever been a "for-sale" knife. Mike Fuller got some WWII trigger assemblies (not sure what weapon) and made them into these knives. It has a kydex slip sheath that rocks. I'll post a pic of it in and with the sheath if you like.

Thanks, That would be awesome. Wish they would make a for sale version. I love little blades like that.

Oriental Bitter Sweet is a very aggressive and invasive vine that strangles even full grown trees. It is very prevalent in NW Ct. where I think these shots were taken. Please do cut any and all of it you run across. Very few animals use the berries as food other than a couple of bird species. It was introduced as an ornamental species in the 1930's I believe. It does make good cordage but the damage it does greatly out weighs it's benefits.---Sorry if i sounded like I jumped on the bandwagon there but Ive seen the damage first hand---KV

So far so AWESOME!!! Can't wait to see the highly anticipated conclusion.

Telling by the taste or something? :D :D Just kidding... I really wish I could tell so much about a piece of crap as you guys do. I think that the most I could tell is if it looks old or not by how it shines... and maybe if it is warm or not (but I don't plan on going arround grabbing every piece of crap I found!).

Great pictures Brian, keep em comming! BTW I was about to go to the Pirinees for five days in a row but the weather is crappier than ever... heavy snowfalls and high avalanche risk.

Orrey,

Here are some pics of the TOPS Tactical Toothpick. My camera is crappy, and I need to go out and get a better one.

It gets whiter as it dries, Mikel, depending on the species of bird. Plus, you can see where the duff was pecked up and turkey footprints on some of the bare ground, and it all is along the same self-made path. It's all the sign in combination that hepls you determine what it is and what it was doing.

By this weekend, I'l have some solid step-by-step photos as we make bow drill sets, then use them.

I can't wait for the step by step.... I'm totally new to making a bow/drill set and it is one small goal I have this year. I'd absolutely love to come to the CT gathering but I couldn't get those days off from work....seems as though everyone beat me to scheduling their vacations.

Definitely looking forward to seeing more pictures Brian!

Guys, I got delayed due to my friend's passing but will probably do a solo tomorrow night through Friday or Saturday, to clear my head and practice some skills. I'll be bringing my Gossman PSK and another knife that just arrived via angel, which I'll tell you about shortly!

Brian just found this thread, it's great...lol Seems like every time I try to get into a discussion, about the different things we all talk about ....I end up getting distracted and lose or get timed out and forget where I was...I have permanent CRS....LOL

LOL, Brett! Got your phone message and will call. Finally back in one place after all the stuff with my friend John. Everyone, in case you missed it, here's a cool thread on bow drill by Kevin Estela. This should keep you occupied a little bit. He learned from Marty Simon and teaches at his school. Kevin is a master of bow drill. Pay particular attention to his close-ups of the fire board. The cut outs are onr of the keys to success. The hot coal needs to drop easily onto the coal catcher. Note how Kevin made the cuts:
