OFF to the SHOT Show....

Congrats, Oh swigger of the velvet hammer. Ethan, have fun at shot, and say hey to Jeff and Mike.

Rayban,

To answer your question:
Becker Tangs are differentially hardened. They are not Blade hardness (57-59Rc) but they will come in at 48-52Rc. We want Tangs/Handles at spring hardness...strong and tough but not so hard that they break easily.

Hope this helps.

oh, look, that sounds like an FAQ entry :) lot of things to write down for me.

Bladite

Go for it Bladie!,

Here is some more: The BK-11 tang has the Wire Breaker/CapLifter so that Tang is a bit harder. (52-54Rc) This is so there is sufficient strength and wear resistence on that feature. It would be a sad day indeed, if you couldn't enjoy a brewski because the Lifter was worn out.

Thank you, paul. You have saved all BK11 owners the sorrow of ever having to experience such a hardship. :D

New Micarta slabs for the Beckers were at the Ka-Bar booth.

Did my best to persuade them to swap the hex headed screws for slotted that can actually be tightened in the field, but no luck.

slot them yourself it takes ten minutes with a file

Or you can just carry a hex wrench like many of us do. They're small, and don't weigh much. Another thing is to use Blue LokTite on the threads before you go out. That way the chances of a screw loosening is pretty small.

Ten minutes with a file in my hands is quite likely to cause serious injury & property damage. :D

Between whichever handgun & spare ammunition carried on an outing where the Beckers might be used, the Mannix, the SAK, and two sets of keys, I already carry enough weight in steel to make my pants droop.
Trying to keep track of a hex wrench is not feasible, whereas I always have the SAK on board when I leave the house.

I can tighten several different slotted screw sizes anywhere I am, not so much on hex & torq screws.

Loc Tite's an option, just prefer the ability to tighten things up if & when needed.

Personal pref.... :)

I think I'll be getting on those Micartas pretty soon.

Then I might suggest running over to Lowe's, Home Depot, ACE, etc., and showing the screw to the helpful guy in the screw department. I would bet that they have a slot head screw that exactly matches the hex headed one. Probably won't cost more than fifty cents.
