Talking with the other half last night and finally getting an answer of sorts.
Her concern with me going full time Knife-making instead of a 9-5 is Health insurance IE: Lack of benefits.
Can someone recommend a health insurance/ dental / vision plan that is reasonable and reliable?
That is about all separating me from living the dream...

Kaiser seems to be the plan of choice with your parameters on the west coast. I don't know if they are in AZ. Blue Cross, Blue Shield have some good HMO's as well, but may cost more. The key is to find an HMO with the best group/hospital in your area.

Health care for many full time makers is simple....have a spouse who has full family benefits.

Besides health care, full timers might want to consider disability insurance. A serious accident can sideline you for a while...and no knifemaking equals no income. Of course, a working spouse with a good paying job is how most full time makers take care of this, too.

The best way to make a million dollars in knifemaking is to start with two million.

What Stacy said. I have a wife with a good job and great insurance. I have a 3d shift machinist job to provide disability and cash for toys. I couldn't afford to provide my own heath insurance n self employment income

Thanks Stacy
Bet your are right on the money however!
She did have an excellent job with great benny's but has decided to be a teacher/Professor at a college. So for now we are doing the starving student bit until she lands a teaching gig and finishes school. I had to take a 9-5 but have just started so the benefits have not kicked in yet.
Need to be prepared for when it's a GO!
What about AARP?

Have you requested any quotes? Whether or not you can get coverage and whether or not it's "reasonable" is completely dependent on your own health and health history. I pay less than $200 a month for a pretty darn good plan with UnitedHealthOne but the same thing for another person could easily be over a thousand bucks. You can take two equally healthy people and have both of them get quotes from two different companies and it's completely possible that the lowest quote for both people won't come from the same company.

Just go poke around on some insurance websites. Stick to the decent sized companies and you should be fine. One thing I've found is you can often get dental and/or vision cheaper if you get it from a different company from your health insurance.

It will all change soon. Health insurance could get very expensive in the next few years. I would advise caution until we see what happens with Obama Care.
