I have not been in the market for a 22 for years and I am not sure what is out there now. I am looking for a hand gun, something with a barrel in the 4 to 5 inch range. Probably semi over revolver. Lightweight would be great as a carry gun vs. target or range. Conceal carry not a consideration. I guess I am looking for an easy to carry gun for plinking and small game. Anybody bought something fun to shoot lately that would complement my 2 current shooters?

You NEED something stainless/synthetic to go with the basics in the pic... Looks like a Double Action Revolver would be a good fit.

How about looking for a 4" Smith & Wesson 617?

The Big Reno Show is this weekend!!!;):D;):D;):thumbup::thumbup:

Well you could stay with ruger and get the sr22, its a fine little plinker, a little ammo sensitive. The browning buckmark is a real fine shooter too. You might look for one of the old high standards military models those are nice shooters too.

For semi auto, Buckmark, no questions asked

But if you're looking for light weight, the 22/45 lite is a good option, but it's no Buckmark

Ok, so hand gun, 4-5" barrel range, accurate enough to hit small peasant... Im not 100% sure what you have sitting there. If that is the ruger mark II then id say your set. If not read on.

Ruger Mark II/III
My go to .22 pistol is the ruger mark II or mark III. While the mark III is a great gun, I prefer the mark II as it feels to be a more solid pistol than the mark III. I believe the frame is based off of a luger style pistol. My mark II is quite a reliable piece as well; a friend has a junior browning 1911 and it shoots well about 70% of the time. the barrel is fairly thick so it wont address the weight issue though i have had no real issues carrying it. In my mind it has enough weight to let you know you still have it. Also it is remarkably accurate. It is also reasonable in price brand new id say they are in the 375-400$ range for brand new (not exact i am Canadian after all).

Sig Mosquito
If your into getting what you pay for the SIG is also a nice choice. I dont own one anymore but many of my friends do and i love to shoot theirs (i gave mine to a young lady im raising). Its not as cheap as the mark II but its definitely worth looking at. Of course you could go to a full size frame with a .22lr swap out (P226R). That would be buying two guns for the price of one. and you wouldnt have to get used to new grips when changing pistols. of course theres a lot more advantage to that kind of set up than just grip but your looking at recommendations, not reviews.
a few recommendations:
1. If you can, find a range that 'rents' guns for use in their range. Check to see if they have a few .22s. If they do go shoot them. try them out and see what you like.

2. Find friends with .22s and go shoot theirs.

3. when you do buy one, get several different variations of ammunition and try them all out to see which one your gun likes best. .22lr pistols can be finicky about the ammo they swallow. For a semi it will most likely be a heavier grain (36-40grain bullet) in order to cycle the action.

4. when you find the ammo your pistol likes best go buy as much as you can. Batches can change and so will the results you see.

I hope i have given you at least some nibblets.

Here is one I'm currently lusting after: It's the Ruger 22/45 Lite Rimfire Pistol.

For the money a 5" version just like the Ruger you have can't be beat.

I mainly shoot Smith and Wesson model 41's with various barrels, but my Ruger Mark II with 5" bull barrel groups almost as well at a much lower cost.

edit- may as well add a pic of my 41's.

There are some good options here. Everybody is going to have there own pro's and con's and deal breakers. Have not considered any S+W and will have to look into them. A little looking at the buckmark and it's on the short list. To Busse007, I do have a Ruger mark 2 government model and it's a great shooter but I don't want to carry that much weight in a .22 cal. I like the Ruger sr22 but the safety lever is released with an upward thumb motion which is the exact opposite of everything I've shot and that a deal breaker (muscle memory is nothing to relearn). The Ruger 22/45 lite looks good. There have been negative comments regarding the feel of the grip on these so I will have to hold one first as any other before narrowing down the list.

I would get a mark 2 with the tapered barrel to be the lighter version of your govt. or slab side stainless with 4" barrel,,, not a big fan of mark 3's or the 22/45 myself.

wish they would make the LCR in a 4" barrel

Ruger MkII or, for a different option, maybe a GSG 1911-22. Shot the GSG my friend owns a few days back, it was an absolute joy to use. Accurate, ran with no problems, controls are the same as a standard 1911.

My favourite is the S&W Model 41 mine dates to the 1960s and has had the bejesus shot out of it..!!

22/45 ruger has my vote. I'm waiting until after the holidays to finally pull the trigger on that one. Get it.

Ruger 22/45 is always thought more of hunting to me, but a great more modern design is the M&P 22 pistol... I like it because it mirrors my M&P9 very closely. I would not recommend the Buckmark as I have one and I am trying to get rid of it as a parts gun if anything... I know what I need to fix it, but it is not really worth investing the money or time to me. Maybe someone else will want to. Top two picks for semi-auto would be the M&P22 and then the Ruger 22/45. I really like the looks of the Gsg/Sig or the Colt 1911 22 guns, but I need to get some experience with them before I recommend them.

I have one of the Commander-length Browning 1911-22's that meets your requirements. Mine has proven to be the best of the bunch of 1911-style .22 pistols I've owned over the past several years, the fit finish and functionality makes it my one and only .22 pistol. At 85% the size of the .45ACP Commander I carry, it makes a great light weight and flat pistol that can be stuck in your pocket and carried all day with no problem. I'm a 1911 guy, so the Made in the USA Browning has proven to be a good choice, for me anyway.

I own a Browning Buckmark. It is the basic model and has been a good shooter so far. It doesn't really like the lead unplated ammo though.

I have both a single six and a MK II and they are great guns, very sturdy...typically Ruger.

Trigger on the MK II is lacking...my buddy has a Buckmark and it is a great pistol. The trigger was way better than either Ruger trigger.

Saw him take a ground squirrel with it at over 100 yards (scoped, over the top of a fence post)...he is a great shooter but that is pretty epic performance for a 8" pistol.
