Off Topic, Mobil synthetic oil?

Ok, I emailed Mobil and they said with the exception of Mazda rotery engins you cand drive off the show room floor with Mobil in the crank case and ensure a long engine life. They said Mobil normally reccomends you swith over to Mobil 1 at your first oil change.
Hopefully they are not just saying this to sell me there oil...now I'm getting paranoid!!!! :p Well you never know but I think I'm going to trust what they say and start using Mobil 1 AFTER my 1st FREE oil change from the dealer, so I guess I would be using Mobil 1 on the 2nd oil change!
Any other input guys? Thank again!;)

You know, Uncle, for years you've been putting harsh additives in your own engine, and yet you keep on ticking.

Hey! SkagSig40 - been a while since Catoosa, enh?

I've still got the 'hawk - been running on syn since the first change - whatever brand is on sale. No problems - can't tell if it's better as I've nothing to compare it to. At 20K miles, it just seems to be getting stronger - no need to add anything between changes. The Firehawk people recommend it, and I suspect that LS-1 might "beat up" the normal stuff more than average. I'm not giving it up.

The Z06 comes standard with it - can't be too evil if they trust the flagship to it. I don't know how anybody could objectively tell what was going on early on but I'm betting that if it's not significantly better, it's at least not any worse. Go for it.

BTW, remember I was wanting anything but a 1911 after y'all talked some sense into me re: the DE .50? Here I sit with 2 Kimbers - an Ultra CDP and a full size Eclipse - things sure did change since that rattly thing I remembered from 15 yrs ago. A Ruger P97, Sig 230 and Glock 21 followed me home too. Off topic, I know, but just wanted you to see the influence you (and Tulsa Mal)had on my newbie self.

Good luck with your new babies - hope to see you and your wife soon, and thanks again for all the good advice.

HEY DRAGONFLY!!!! How have ya been!?!?!? Long time no see! I hope all things are well with you and the family. So your FireHawk is running like a champ! We just couldn't turn down the Z28 when we took her out for a test drive! Heak your only young once! It was acctually the very last one the dealer had for sale and production has now stopped!:(
So what have you been up to? I see you got a few guns! Those Kimbers are nice!!!! I only bought 1 gun sense the konvention, a Springfield XD 40. It is a little like a Glock. I still always end up shooting my SIG 229 though...I just love that gun!:D

Hadn't thought about handguns for 15 years 'till SkagSig at Catoosa - After buying the Glock, Sig, Ruger and trading a Kahr, I got to renting everything at the local range just "to see what I could see".

Won't even list everything I went through but one of the staff offered me a "free" rental on an Ultra CDP.

Hawk note: No Such Thing as a Free Rental. Counter sales dude was cast in the same mold as a schoolyard pusher: "First one is free, kid".

Semper, you are sooooooooo right.

Ha Ha Ha! That is true nothing is free, especially when it comes to fire arms! So what is your favorite now?

SkagSig - congrats on the Z28! You'll love it - it'll take just fine to the syntec. I dyno'd at 305 RWHP with zero mods - can't be hurting the thing. Welcome to the club. You're right - only young once. I've been lovin' F-bods forever and the Firehawk seemed the right way to close out the affair - best one yet.

So I don't fit the demographics - 50-ish is not the 'hawk target audience - scroomawl. It makes a fine daily commuter.

I had rented a 229 in 9 - sweetness in abundance, no doubt - it's on my short list for sure. Don't know why it was _so_ much more comfortable than my 230 but it was. I'm not sure about a 229 in 40 but you haven't been wrong once yet, guess I'll have to give it a try. The 1911's are the devil's work though - I can already hear the siren call of Wilson, Baer, Burns but I WILL resist.

Check out the forums at LS1.com, SLPeng.com and a pile of others - you are now part of an active extended family. 'Course the HI forum always comes first.

COOL! I was wondering about a "Camaro/Trans Am" Forum! I'll stop by for sure!
My wife shoots a 239 in 9mm but I like the .40 as it has almost if not as much knock down power as the .45. It is a little smaller bulit but operates under higher pressure. My 229 dosn't kick much at all. If you get one buy the Houg(spelling?) grips for it, they are very nice and make for a good solid grip even when wet!

Well now that you are back stick around and hang out! I need to go to bed because I have to work a 12-14 hour day tomorrow

:barf: Talk to you later!

P.S. So do you think that the Mobil 1 will be good for My Chevy Silverado as well? It has a 5.3 liter Vortec engine. I hear it is derived from the LS1 Vett engine?

SkagSig,

Favorite - gotta be the CDP - same basic size as the 230 with a much bigger hole in the end. Doesn't kick like the Kahr P40, either.

#2= Custom Eclipse. The 230 isn't on the list but a 229 most assuredly is. No revolvers yet, and that 1911 trigger is making me not miss 'em too badly. If I hunted, the new Redhawks would be pulling my chain, although I'd start collecting pictures of a Korth just to make my wife nervous.

Still got a lot to learn - Catoosa wasn't that long ago.

Which one of you gets the Z?

She gets the Z28 but I use it a lot!!:D I got the truck for camping and our chocolate Labs!:D

So what do you think about Mobil 1 in the truck engine?

I'm no expert but I heard the truck mills weren't stressed like the LS1's - max torque at lower rpm, yadda.

I doubt the syn would hurt anything, but the LS1 wants it.

My experience with the .40 was limited to the Kahr P40 and I think my hand is too big - only reason I can think of that the Kahr would split the web of my hand after 50 rounds and the only thing that hurt after 300 rounds of .45 in the Kimber was my forearm from having held it up.

Stay in touch, I'm fading fast.

The valve guides are one thing, but the rings still need to seat properly. Yes, the machining is MUCH better than it used to be, but the final machining of wear metal can only be done by driving. I would wait at least 10,000 miles before switching. And change the initial oil at 500, to be safe.

No doubt Mobil 1 is better, but at what point is it overkill? I really don't know. I am driving a 1988 Toyota pickup with 240,000 miles, all on Pennzoil from day 1. It is just starting to burn oil.

YMMV, and congrats!

This was a private conversation, and I don't wish to butt in too forcefully, but someone mentioned the DE50. I found this humorous because two good friends parted ways over that handgun. One considered it unneccesarily bulky and asked, 'why on earth for'? The other admitted the same but responded, "It does the job, has the felt recoil of a .44 in a wheel gun, and is just plain a lot of fun." The thing is an oversized 1911 anyway. I vote for having fun. My 2 cents on a personal taste topic. After enough sig 220's, Kahrs, Klocks and 1911's, people tend to choose the one that feels best to their hands. Like khukuris. What is 'sweet' one year changes the next, the hand having the final say.

I drive a 1983 Ford LTD, those who were at Catoosa should remember. It is just starting to burn oil at 99K (500 more miles for the big 100K turnover). I have run M1 through it in the past and switched back to the standard stuff since. (I wont pay the extra for the M1 if I am not changing it myself.) I found that it did a real good job of cleaning up my engine and noticed no burn-off in the 5 months it was in.
Also just a side note, but try a more expensive oil filter. The generic kind are good, but I refuse to use the $3 kind anymore. If you stick with "normal" oil why not spend the extra $3-5 on something you know will help filter out all the crud in your engine?

Sig,
I suggest doing what the Tech at the Dealership told you. The Number Crunchers at Mobil dont know their *ss from their elbows when it comes to cars. I worked at a garage for awhile and I will never forget how many times I heard "Well it should work!" from the parts people and my master tech telling me "It is the wrong part."
Listen to the guy who turns the wrenches, they would do the same for their car.
