This morning on the radio I heard a snip of Kerry lambasting Bush for not doing more to support the Assault Weapons Ban. He spoke derisively of the NRA and seemed to support gun control in general. Naturally I took extreme exception to this. It's stuck in my craw all day until, rather than choke on it I decided to write the jerk. (As if he'll ever actually read it.) If you're interested you can read what I sent him:
-------------------------------
Dear Mr. Kerry;
I'm a Republican who has planned to vote for you throughout your campaign. I have lobbied extensively in your favor to whoever would listen. I believe upholding the Constitution of the United States is the most important issue of our time. I do not believe the Bush administration has done so and I've thought you would be more likely to hew to its precepts than he has.
Yet this morning I heard you speak about the Assault Weapons Ban; you indicated that it should be renewed, appeared to favor gun control in general, and intimated that the NRA is some kind of shadowy, undesireable organization that represents a threat to everyday people.
You should be ashamed.
Let me first speak to the NRA. I'm a life member of the National Rifle Association and strongly believe in the individual right to own firearms. I'm not a hunter - I take no satisfaction in killing any living thing - but I do enjoy target shooting and take my responsibility to defend my family seriously. The NRA supports these rights. The NRA is the only organization of which I'm aware that actively teaches responsible gun ownership. To make such an upstanding, patriotic organization sound like a gang of thugs is absurd, disrespectful of American freedom, and wholly unconscionable.
I have lived where guns are illegal; banning firearms did not prevent crimes commited with them, it only made everyday law abiding citizens defensless against those who would do them harm. Gun control does not prevent crime; it creates victims.
About the assault weapons ban. Most people seem to have the mistaken notion that "assault weapons" as defined by this worthless law are the same as automatic weapons - "machine guns." This is incorrect. Automatic weapons are already illegal for anyone except police, military and those with specialized licenses. Allowing this misguided law to expire will not make automatic weapons any more illegal than they already are.
The firearms that have been curtailed are nothing more than semiautomatic rifles that function in the same manner as many hunting rifles do, that have no more lethal nature than common hunting or target rifles. Their only unique aspect is a vaguely threatening form arising from cosmetic design. To make such firearms illegal based on their appearance is ludicrous and pointless. It's akin to racism, to prejudice. Frankly, I expected more from you.
Until this morning you had my vote. Now I'm undecided. I believe the American way of life is deeply threatened by the current administration but I feel personally threatened by your obviously unenlightened view of the Second Ammendment. I love my country. I believe that our Constitution is among the greatest documents ever written and has created the strongest and most open society in human history. I vote. My vote goes to the person I believe most loves my country and will best support its law.
I am listening carefully. Bush is at a disadvantage because I can compare what he said to what he did. All I have to base my expectations from you on is what you say.
You have made a mistake and I respectfully request that you become more educated about firearms, the NRA, the assault weapons ban and the Second Amendment before you speak about it again.
Sincerely,
Dave Larsen
