I just got promoted to management and now I have to wear slacks to work. This means that I am going to have to leave My Benchmade 710 and Emerson A100 at home. :grumpy: I am looking for a small locking knife that I can deep carry (clip-less or clip removed). I like traditional blade shapes (drop point, spear). I have many Case knives that I know would fit the bill but I would prefer something non-traditional looking but also bullet proof... like if Emerson made the Fallkniven U2. I would like to spend less than $150 and nothing made in China. Thanks!

You could put one of the Benchmade deep carry clips on your 710. Clip screw spacing on the A100 looks to be the same too, so that same clip would probably fit on that s well.

ZT 0770CF and 0566 also both carry very deep in pocket. Pic below shows a 0566 in both tip-up (left-most) and tip-down (3rd from left) position. The 0566 is a standard drop point, and the 0770 is more of a sheepsfoot profile. They're both ZT's, so you can count on them both to be "bullet proof".

The Caly3 is also very discrete in pocket. I'd expect the Chaparral would be as well. Both are Spyderco's leaf-shape blade. Here's a pic of the Caly3 in pocket. These aren't as "bullet proof" as the ZT's, but they're still plenty sturdy.

The SOG Flash 1 is probably the most discrete carrying knife (w/ a pocket clip) I have, and it's also a standard drop point. Here's a pic of it in pocket (right-most)

Oh, and congrats on the promotion!

Emerson Mini A-100
Spyderco Lava
Benchmade Mini Stryker
Al Mar Hawk

...There's countless other tactical themed sub 3" knives that go great in a pocket.

The Mini A-100 or Stryker are as tacticool as it gets, and are significantly smaller than their parent knives. I wouldn't recommend the Stryker in a suit pocket, it has the most aggressive G10 I've ever handled and would probably tear your clothes up.

The Al Mar, with a micarta or wood handle, will appear non threatening.

I use my Lava constantly. The 1.8" blade doesn't shock anyone, it has a bizarre (though extremely secure and useable) shape that doesn't look at all tacticool, and it's far below the maximum legal limits just about anywhere including Chicago or Washington DC (if I remember correctly). Get one of these while you can, with the G10 handle it's an incredible legal-anywhere slicer. If you don't like the Blue G10, you can dye it (but risk voiding the warranty):

Skyline with Low pro Clip...
Mini Grip with Contigo Clip...
ParaMilitary2 with Low Pro clip..

ZT 0770CF. If you know where to look, you can find them for right around $150.00. I've got one in my pocket right now and I work in an office too.

Welcome and congrats.

1) Where have you gotten the impression that Emerson is the only maker whose knives don't stand up to use? Particularly office use? That Fallkniven U2 isn't going to fall to pieces under normal use, let alone while opening packages of sticky notes.

2) Read this very recent thread on the subject....http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1166493-If-you-work-in-an-office-what-knife-knives-you-carrying-today

Maybe look at the LionSteel Mini 8210. 2.25" D2 blade, 2oz, a little smaller than a Fallkniven U2 but very comparable in over all dimensions. I picked up a clipless version (comes with a nice leather pouch) in olive wood for around $100, but there is also a titanium bolster version with pocket clip that will cost a little more.

I'd also recommend a Benchmade 707 Sequel but, with Benchmade's new pricing, I'm not sure if you can still get one NIB for under $150.

Good luck, OP! :)

How about fixed blade? I'm in a suit a lot and an environment where "weapons" are not ok. I've been rocking a bark river mikro Canadian and don't get a second look if your place is more liberal to allowing knives maybe the mini Canadian

Not sure if this would be "bullet proof" but a dragonfly2 fit the bill for discreet. It's also an extremely good cutter and not super expensive.

I would second the Dragonfly. Seriously, it has great ergos for such a small knife and it still offers plenty of blade. It also comes with a wire clip which pretty much buries it in the pocket. Here's a pic of my Dragonfly with a Paramilitary 2.

I wear slacks everyday and have carried this several times. Picked it up for $130. Hogue EX01. Can be carried tip down for a deeper ride in your pocket.

Congratulations on your promotion! The knife I carry whilst wearing a suit (similar pocket situation) is a Spyderco Domino with a deep carry clip from theoriginalspaceman in my right front pocket. With his clips, though, any Spyderco with the common clip screw pattern simply disappears in the corner of your pocket. They sell out quickly, so if none are available currently, and you decide on a Spyderco with this route in mind, send me an email - I have one I could pass along to you.

I have been thinking about this topic for a long, long time. I am not currently in management, but I do work in a position where business casual is required, and carrying a knife clipped to the pocket could quickly result in termination.

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding whether you can carry a knife clipped to the pocket once you are in a management position. If your peers and subordinates don't mind, it might not be an issue. But all it takes is one person to be uncomfortable and report you to HR, then you have a problem. The other thing is most knives with pocket clips will wear out pockets very quickly. There are a few knives that won't (I carried a Kershaw Leek in slacks for years with no visible pocket wear. The other knife I would consider, if I still had the option to carry like this, would be the Spyderco Chaparral 2).

I think you have the right idea in considering carrying your knife in the bottom of the pocket, not clipped to the pocket. I also think you are on the right track thinking Fallkniven U2. Also consider the Spyderco Air or Benchmade Megumi. Slightly larger but also pocketable with removed clip, would be Chaparral or BM 707.

Not much else I can think of unless something like a Buck 55 would interest you.

Everybody loves Swiss Army Knives. An alox Minichamp (well any Minichamp, but the alox looks good) would do everything that you need in an office and arouse zero interest.

Well Taiwan isn't China so I would recommend the Spyderco Air.

- not made in China
- clipless and made to carry in a pocket sheath
- 2.55" CPM-M4 blade
- can be had for around $130 from what I've seen
- weighs 1.3 oz
- Taichung Spyderco's are some of the best quality knives in the industry, many here compare them to Chris Reeves knives

I agree with checking out lionsteel also.

I have a g10 opera and I took the clip off, it is a very sturdy knife, D2 blade, with lockback. It's very comfortable in the pocket clipless; it doesnt poke or anything. I wear mostly jeans so I'm not sure about how it feels in slacks.

Not too tactical, but very practical.

Idk why, but I use mine for food prep all the time. The blade shape is like a folding paring knife.

It looks great on a cheese plate also :D

+1 on the Lionsteel Opera, it looks very classy with the wood handle. I also really like Lionsteels D2.

How about the new Spyderco Manix 2 lightweight in CPM S110v? Very light, killer steel and non threatening royal blue FRN Scales.

For a folder, the Spyderco Native 5 hasn't been mentioned yet... if you can find one. Personally, I'd carry a BRKT Essential in a pocket sheath. It'll handle anything that an office can generate. If it's not the right size for you, move down to a City Knife or up to a Northstar EDC. All are available around or below $150 and all are easy to carry.

Same here. What I do keep clipped to my RFP is a Leatherman Micra, a AAA flashlight, and a peanut lighter. That serves several purposes. First, if anyone sees the clip, I can pull out my items and they can quickly verify that I'm not carrying a "weapon". Second, it draws attention away from my LFP where I deep carry my unclipped EDC blade. And third, the scissors on the Micra are so incredibly useful that I rarely need to pull out my EDC anyway.
