Office Knife Carry

I work for one of the big 5 accounting firms. I recently picked up a CRKT Kasper/Crawford (smaller size) and I would love to carry it around with me clipped in the pocket of my dress slacks in the office. However, I fear that someone will see the clip, ask me what it is and want to see it, and then I might get into big trouble. If I carried a small Case three blade stockman and someone spotted it, would the Case really seem less threatening to people than the Kasper or would any knife be a problem?

I also work in the big 5. I work on the IT side and my office is relativly informal, but I carry a blade with me all the time. Lately its been an old cheep schrade with 2'' blade that has partial serations. I often hold it and flip it around in my hand (closed) and it doesnt seem to bother anyone. I recently ordered a Spyderco Native. I will start carrying that one in the office instead. I dont think I will take that one out as much though.

Measure twice, cut once

Clip the knife in your waistband, with the clip behind your belt near a belt loop, and no one will know it’s there.

Get a William Henry Carbon Fiber Lancet,
very sleek and still strong knife and a decent clip so you can clip it to your pocket, lighter than most any pen. I wear mine every day!

See my WH collection here, the carbon fiber model I'm speaking of is 4th one down from the top...cuts very well!

Before, i used to clip my knife to my slacks in the office. Most of the people don't notice it. Only people that i really know asks me what it is, then i tell them it's a pocket knife, end of story. I don't have to show them. Actually, those who insist to see it are those somewhat interested in knives.

The reason why i don't clip my knives to my slacks anymore is that i lost two already this way. It's mainly due to the style of pockets on slacks. I only use the clip when i'm wearing jeans which is most of the time nowadays.

Does your office have some sort of policy against carrying tools to work? Is it considered beneath office workers to use tools besides the bean counting machines? Do you act in some kind of bizarre or threatening manner that might lead them to believe that you are unstable, and only the lack of a weapon keeps you from being a threat to others? Is your work environment kept free of sharp objects for this reason?

If not, why are you worried about getting into “big trouble”?

I have a beautifully decorated Sebenza and that seems to go over pretty well. But, when I pull out my Hartsfield kozuka dagger, I get funny looks and people edging toward the door.

Anything from William Henry would be perfect. They make amazing knives. Most are small and unobtrusive.

I carried my BM750 (Pinnacle) everyday to the office, no one would have ever noticed it if I didn't pull it out. Sometimes it was clipped in my rear pocket of my slacks, and sometimes just sat in the bottom of the pocket if I wanted it totally invisible or didnt want the clip to scratch something. You would be surprised how unobservant people are.

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.

I happen to be of service to a large financial institution at the moment (18 years to be exact) and in all those years have never been without a knife in my pocket.Today a BM Stryker is sitting in my back pocket and an 11" Stilletto is residing in my top coat pocket hung in my office. I just don't use the clips and no one ever knows. Why advertise to people who just don't get it and risk a scene. At my age I don't have to explain or justify anything to anybody.

I work in advertising & doing simple utility cutting around the office has resulted in various degrees of butt-pucker among my co-workers. I've been "talked to" about "scaring" people w/ my Wegner while opening boxes, cutting apples, etc... Sheesh! I think it's because it comes out of the pocket & opens pretty fast with a solid click- makes folks think Sharks vs. Jets- this is, NYC after all & all people with knives are, by default criminals & lunatics.
Dress here is casual (jeans, etc) but when I meet w/ clients, out comes the standard-issue grey suit & tie & no pocket clips are showing at all.

My advice - < 3" blade, non-serrated, in-pocket as opposed to clipped.

The clip is really a tactical, quick access feature, or to prevent from losing it. I have no real need for tactical draw at work, and I have sufficient awareness of the knife, as it's the only thing I keep in my Dockers' strong side front pocket. I bought my small, plain edge Point Guard to replace my fully serrtated Delica for just this purpose.

I'm in a suit and tie five days a week, I always have three knives on me. One is a mini puukko I wear around my neck under my shirt. #2 is either a Spydie Walker lt/wt or a CRKT/KFF clipped to my right front pocket, the Spydie is more discret. #3 is a AG Russell 'One Hand Knife' with jigged bone scales worn in a covered cloth belt case, soon to be replaced by a Custom Washburn stag handled, damascus folder, with a belt sheath by Gary Graley. This rig is designed to show off the knife, and I couldn't care less if anyone doesn't care for it. Okay I'm not an Accountant, and one of my Managers does walk around the office with a baseball bat, so what's he going to say?

I don't work in an office, but my work takes me into colleges and universities in my area, where knives in general are not welcome.

I've carried my AFCK, 710 Axis, 910S Stryker, Spyderco Police, etc., clipped to my front pocket. People really are just not observant at all. With the exception of the Police model, most of the other knives sit really low in the pocket. Someone one time asked me if that's my pager. No one else has noticed.

Only one guy has ever asked me, "Hey, what knife is that in your pocket?" and it was away from work. It turned out he was carrying an Emerson Commander himself, so it took a knife person to notice the clip.

Maybe a good idea in your office is, if you want to carry your CRKT knife, do so, and carry a small, 2-blade pen knife or small Swiss Army knife in your other pocket for office chores.

I carry a half dozen knives around the office but the one I whip out to threaten my office mates with is my opinel #8.

What I do when dressed up is take my SAK and put that one in my pocket while my big one(spyderco endura II) is inside my waistband under my belt loop invisible to the untrained eye. I then use the SAK whenever someone is around that would have a problem with me snapping out the Endura. This is a very good idea in your situation and I hope it helps.

Don't ask about the time I had a new rifle barrel shipped to a major Wall St firm (cleared it with the boss FIRST).

Right now, I work for one of the major networks. MOST of the people around my department are cool with knifes, with ONE person a bit nervious. It might help that the Union guys (who actually tape the shows etc) are often walking around with knives/multi tools on their belts. I've also found that almost all the LAN Admins carry SOMETHING, and many carry a big tactical, so my William Henry doesn't raise many eyebrows

I carry a Spyderco Mouse for these very reasons.

Small, and innocent looking.

Though, a guy did step back when I used it today, I think he was startled by the speed at which it was deployed.

To the original question, second part, a traditional folder may be a good idea. I am always thinking of buying a Case CopperLock.

One more vote for anything William Henry, but particularly the CF Lancet. I've never had a negative reaction to this knife. Carrried in my shirt pocket, only one person has ever asked what it was; clipped to my shirt underneath my tie, it's invisible.
