Office knife...

Well guys,
I was at the office yesterday and I took out my folder to open a letter. A BM 710 McHenry & Williams in ATS 34. I got the "Holy crap, what are you going to do with a knife that big?"

So... In my opinion... this is a good reason to get a new knife. I have had my BM for about 18 months and now it is time to get a Spydie. I was thinking a Police, before this incident, but now I am thinking a Dodo.

I need it to be left handed, have a pocket clip, and have the "a little knife that can do a big knife's job".

What do yall think?

Calypso, Jr. Small, non-threatening pocket scalpel. Right or left hand clip. Trust me on this one.

I second the calypso Jr Ltwt PE. The grey ones have a nice clip and they cut great. For a second choice I use the Ti Salsa. Not very long blade but it is wide with the compression lock.
My 3cents US.

Actually work in an office and have been doing this 'experiment' for years. Knives I use(d) that don't call attention to themselves except for complimentary comments are: CASE Doctor's knife; Spyderco KIWI; Fallkniven U2; and any of those small SAKs.
Steve

Edited to note that I just realized none of these have a pocket clip. Maybe that's because they're too small? I did manage to use a Cricket in the office for a while without having anybody run screaming from the room - that has a clip and you can always disguise it as a money clip!

I've had people say the same thing about a knife I made myself that has a blade of about 1" long. Some people are just stupid idiots. Anyway, I don't think the Dodo will appease people any more than the knife you already "offended" them with. It's extremely aggressive, IMO, and it's so stupidly sharp that I would hesitate to let someone who wasn't a knife junkie to even use it (I'm not kidding about that. I've had a Dodo for a couple months and I've cut myself 10 times more with it than with any other knife). Little locking folders like those made by Chris Crawford are perfect for the workplace. Classy, non-threatening, sized right, and nice quality. People will criticize anything, though.

But, since, I got into flashlights recently, I always have a knife and a flashlight with me. I use the lights several times a day, the knives less, but when people are floundering around it's nice to be able to offer a helping hand (tool).

What's with this appeasement thing????????????
Get on board with the Republican/Conservative Revolution!!!!!
Educate, lead......get the Police!!

The Cricket's got that look that even my lady says is cute and it'll handle most office cutting needs. If not that, I'd go for a Navigator if you want the cutting power in a small package.

You know, you're supposed to hold the rough blue part, not the smooth silver part. ;)

Believe it or not, I actually got a "Wow, that thing sure looks viscous" remark from seeing my cricket. It is even PE, and the person who said that is my brother-in-law. And, the setting was not even office - it was at the beach house we all were staying in last summer. He is even a hunter. My first response was laughter but he was not joking.

That one really surprised me but just reinforced my belief that no knife is immune from some peoples' negative preconceptions of edged tools.

I dont know. I am still interested in the Police. I dont have any serrated knives anymore, and I kinda miss them. I gave one away here, and another there... and pretty soon all my buddies, and prior-girlfriends, have really good quality serrated and partially serrated blades.

Perhaps I should get the police... or maybe a Spyderhawk... I have been wanting one of those for awhile. Maybe I should get 2. A plain edge and a serrated...hmmm. Yeah...

Ya, how do you cut yourself 10 times (or more)? Had it for a long time? So sharp it slipped throught the material you were cutting and blade caught your arse? Or were you holding the "smooth silver part"? :D

Meerkat? Oh the new one umm,,, Stretch looks the part. Both are lefty friendly, I think.

I am lucky, most of the offices I have worked in are pretty blade friendly and the only comments I get are usually out of jealousy. I usually carry a lockback SAK just to make sure it doesn't get anyone excited.

Ask your favorite girl to help you pick out a knife she thinks is pretty or cute and pick the cutest model that will still serve your tasks.

Having two knives is never a bad thing either. A harmless friendly little knife for your basic tasks and a "real knife" that doesn't come out of your pocket or out from around your neck unless its really important.

I just got a fully serrated carbon fiber police in trade and this thing is soooo nice. It looks like a largish gentleman's knife until it is opened then

I was fortunate enough to get one that has never been sharpened and the serrations on this thing are something to behold.

I got the exact same thing from my boss in the office.
I used to like the Cricket because I could cup it in my hand, open it as my hand moved towards the object to cut, and fold it up as my hand moved back to my side, the blade was only visible for a very short time.
The other drawback is for these requirements the Cricket isn't lefty carry.

My recommendation would also be the Calypso Jnr. Lefty carry, and cuts like a "much" bigger knife.

I agree with the idea of replacing the 710 with a Spydie. Just get a Chinook II and that same guy will be too scared to say anything to you. ;)

On a more serious note, if you want to carry something that is (almost) guaranteed not to offend or frighten anyone, you may want to consider a small SAK. There are even some variants that have locking blades (although I don't know if any of the smaller ones do.)

I carry a normal knife in one pocket, and a tiny Victornox Classic on my keychain. Around sheeple I will only take out the SAK.

Regards,
bls

I always carry a plain Jester around..loose in a zipped pocket...it looks small, light, cute, cuts well for office tasks and no one ever bats an eyelid at it. Works well for me but I can see others wanting something bigger, in which case a sak might be in order.
