Ok, so you’re an office worker and want to EDC a single-bladed locking folder. You’ll want to use it opening copier paper boxes, mail, a few blister packs of new office supplies, and maybe peel a grapefruit on lunch-break. You’re probably not going to opt for anything Emerson, a RAT-1, or something like the Kershaw Blur (until you're off the corporate clock, anyway :D) You’re probably going to want something more discreet that is smaller and lighter; a knife with a decent pocket-clip that won’t eat up your khakis but will keep your knife secure. Maybe you just want a knife you can drop right into your pocket and forget all about it… until you need it.

What do you recommend?

Make it look obvious, not "tactical".

I use a Spyderco Tasman Salt in bright yellow FRN handle for opening things in the office. People are so used to seeing it that the office ladies are always asking me to borrow "that yellow hook knife" whenever somebody needs to open a box.

I've been toying with a similar question myself. I've narrowed it down to a Spyderco Sage, Benchmade Mini Griptilian, or perhaps an FRN Delica as a less expensive option.

But they took my swingline stapler.

Just get a SAK they are everwhere and no one can say they are offensive.

"I could set the building on fire..." :D

We're looking for single-bladed locking folders here, fella. I have a few SAKs and other slip-joints. But, yeah, no one fears the SAK... love 'em!

Opinel
bright colored Delica (blue or purple, maybe)
Benchmade 943 if it';s not too big or too expensive
Kershaw Wild Turkey, rainbow Leek, OD (1 or 2--the small one) or small Liner Action
Benchmade Nagara
Boker Subcom

my picks

Strider SMF
Hinder xm-18
Microtech of some kind

But then again I don't mind making a bit of a statement

My Benchmade 940 and 930 don't attract too much attention at work. That being said, between the two, the 940 is probably my favorite. I used to carry a Leek, but to many people thought the assisted opening made it an "illegal switch blade."

I agree, as mentioned earlier, an SAK is relatively innocuous knife and a good choice.

Many of Spyderco's "little big knives" would fit the bill for an office EDC. I carry the D'fly 2 to the office.

If you wanted to be real careful, and real stylish, a high-end slipjoint would be the ticket. Pulling out an Alsdorf custom or Wiseman Ultra light would get some nice nods from co-workers.

Geez, dude, you're gonna make me cry! I love Mike's knives (I really, really want a Doctor made by him) and sent him an e-mail asking if he'd reconsider his 'no international sales' policy. He respectfully declined (too many past problems with over the border shipping.) Mr. Alsdorf is as classy as his knives. Anyone who *can* get one of his knives, should do so ASAP...
