I want to say something before I start. I was raised by a Father who was ex-Military and worked for the DoD as a Quality Assurance inspector until he retired, so I had Integrity and Honesty pounded into my thick skull. I intend no personal slight to Balding Eagle or his skills...so any negative or criticizing comments I make in my review are based on my desire to report the truth (as I see it) and for constructive purposes. A manufacturing process can't be bettered if the problems are not addressed.

I also want to thank BE for this opportunity and for his generosity.

''Making of'' Thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/947785-BK-2-Sheath-Passaround

Received the sheath package today via Brown Truck...was packaged VERY securely in bubble-wrap, then encased in foam peanuts within a cardboard box. The sheath was in excellent condition, I would feel safe in saying it arrived to me in exactly the same condition it shipped in.

I am now keeping my eyes open for a bear...LOL

The F&F is great, it's truly a beautiful sheath. It is very sturdily-built, I have examined all the stitching and stamping, I have not found a loose or misplaced one yet. The color is nice, and the dye is uniform throughout, no major lighter/darker spots.

The design is simple and well-thought out, and even at first glance/handle it is 100% obvious it was crafted by a man who respects what he does and has an eye for detail/quality. If the Devil is in the details, this sheath is going to Heaven.

The hardware is Brass or at least Brass-coated, very Old-World and classy, and appears to be high-quality & heavy-duty. It snaps closed with authority, and without being TOO difficult to open or close.

Retention/Fit to the knife is EXCELLENT...I have NO doubt the retention strap is completely unnecessary.

100_1556.jpg

hanging, no strap

100_1575.jpg

I dropped it from this position about 10 times, at least a 24'' vertical fall, and then a abrupt stop when it hit the end. Not once did it fall out of the sheath, it did move, but not all the way out.

100_1576.jpg

fully-seated in the sheath

The most it ever came out

Still secure in sheath even half-way out.

The belt-loop is rock-solid, it might as well be a one-piece unit as strong and tight as BE's stitches are, zero movement or weakness in all the added on pieces.

You can kinda see it below my love-handles LMAO

The only thing I would say could be improved/changed (right now, after initial testing..my opinion may change after further use) is the leather on the retaining strap could be a lil thicker stock, just for my personal taste. It is strong as-is though, and like I said before, the strap is not really even needed. BE told me he intended to add a shock-cord system to the strap, but he didn't have his supply delivered yet, if I had known before it shipped I would have had him make the holes and I would have added the shock-cord. But I aint cutting on it so it will pass-along without it.

So concludes Day 1

I forgot to mention..it of course has that awesome leather smell to it. I love going into boot/tack stores because of that smell LOL

..and I'm certain Dubz will have some mind-blowing macro pics when he gets his mitts on this LOL

Haha, do my best. I just wanted to mention, that I'll be out of town from the 6th, through the 9th. I won't be able to get to the mail until the 10th.

First of all, my hat's off to BE! That is a very nice looking sheath! Secondly, I appreciate the unbiased review and the awesome photos!

Nicely done Thrill!

You guys are gonna kill me with this! Well, Helga's out of commission until I get new scales for her anyhow. Nice sheath, to bad it wasn't a dangler, then we could let all hell break loose with how thick and solid it is. Ok, I'm done with the big boy jokes that you guys keep making (ok, I'll admit, it's mostly by choice) read.

The List as of now, unless BE wants to change it...it's his passaround so it's up to his discretion.

I wouldn't mind if it gets passed around to anyone who wants it. HOWEVER, one individual has already asked about 1st dibs on it when the pass around is over. If he still wants it after ya'll get done test driving, then I think it only fair to stick to the list. If not, then we can make additions to the list. We'll just have to see.
BTW Thrill, glad it made it thru the first day..........and nice photos!
Cheers

Looks great! That IS thick, looks like 8 stacks including the belt loop, damn. But I think that's what makes it looks so damn nice, is that overbuilt, old-world style. I'm sure you're tired of hearing me say this BE, but I'll sign up for the first Machax sheath passaround you do :p And I'll probably call dibs on purchasing it too. Matter of fact, I'm calling dibs on it right now lol.

Haze,
OK, OK.........you have 1st dibs on a Machax sheath. But, that's gonna be a ways off. Presently, I'm working on my 1st real order!
Cheers

Got the sheath from thrillbilly today, and took some photos. Have some impressions/comments as well:

Really nice looking sheath. I realize my tiger stripe scales don't go with it too well, but it's what I have:

Better shot of the recess to accommodate the scales:

With knife inserted. Fits well:

Retention is good, but it will come out if you shake it. But, to be fair, my knife has a clip point, so there's less blade to snug up to:

Even put a patina on the snap, haha. Just kidding, of course:

Something I noticed, and took some shots indoors of. The retainer sort of gets in the way when inserting. I can see where a sharp blade would cut in. Of course you could hold it out of the way, but this would be an inconvenience to many. I know BaldingEagle said he was going to make a shock cord system on the retainer, and I think this would be a good idea:

I like this sheath overall. It's definitely a nice looking sheath. I love the color, and the tooling work looks great, as the photos clearly show. The brass fittings go well with the color of the sheath, and are well placed. It is thick, but not as heavy as I thought it would be. I'll weigh it later and take more photos. Thrillbilly already took some photos of it on the belt, so I won't go there. Besides, my gut would probably hide it anyways, haha. :D I like the simplicity of it. Not in the tooling/details, but in form and function. As stated before, the retainer definitely needs the shock cord system to get it out of the way of the blade edge. I also feel retention could be a little tighter, but, as also stated before, my blade has been clipped, and obviously has less to hold onto. More photos and impressions forthcoming.

Ah! There's those macro shots I was talkin bouts! LOL

Hmmmm. I wonder if my 2 could be a hair thicker then yours? I have heard from a man who has an 11 thinner (or thicker can't recall) then average, enough that kydex made on it won't fit another 11. I had quite excellent retention from the sheath, but then it was new when I got it and performed tests, will be interesting to see how the retention is in another couple weeks of use.

As for my wrap-up review, I liked it as well the day I sent it as I did the day I got it. Held up well for me.

Well, like I said, my 2 isn't exactly stock. A lot of metal has been removed.

Hey
Thrillbilly and The Warrior talking about who's is thicker!!!! Warrior, I am going to send all my sheaths to you for photo sessions before I send it out. Amazing photography. Really, really nice! Also nice seeing signs of a little wear and tear. Keep me posted as you look at it further. Also, I now have elastic cord to put on the retention straps.
Thanks
Balding
