offroad motorcycle for bug out

I wonder if anyone has considered bicycles? Easily enough to had to the vehicle bug out, quick enough to transition to. And around here there are plenty of trails you would have trouble getting a motorcycle over....not without carrying in over obstacles.
Just a thought.

falnovice, I maintain a mountain bike with paniers both for recreation and as a second stage bug out vehicle. Stage1 is the prepped jeep, stage 3 is footpower.

Any one paying attention to third world street scenes on TV will quickly note the large loads that can be carried on both motorcycles and bicycles.

I would like to find an old moped and adapt the engine to the mountain bike; 50cc, 80+ miles per tank (dont remember if it was a gallon or a quart), 45 mph speeds, pedal power if the fuel runs out and it can be carried if/when necessary.

Enjoy!

Ras,

I own a Kawasaki Gpx 250 and wanted to help answer your question but 'm not sure exactly what mpg means -- is it miles per gallon of petrol?

If that is what it means, then I get about 70 mpg for freeway travelling. By freeway travelling, I mean very few stops and starts and travel speeds of about 100km/hr (about 62m/hr). That is with a full load of about 140 lbs for me and another estimated 65-80 lbs for my gear. In the city with speeds about 60km/h (about 37m/hr) and stops and starts for traffic etc., my fuel economy drops to about 60 mpg.

Hope this helps.

I don't know why, falnovice, but your post brought the mental image to my mind of the scenes in the movie "The great Escape" of actor James Coburn going down the road on that bicycle with the suitcase on the back. Definatly low profile role camoflage!:D

I got an Suzuki SV650 and i get about 55mpg on the freeway going about 80-85 in the city its about 40, but i like to ride fast. If i would slow down i should get atlist an extra 5-8mpg more. Sometimes a bigger engine uses less gas as you dont have to push it as hard. Longer stroke engine use less gas too. If you noticed the people in Asia dont ride very fast. A 250 is light enough that you can push it and even help it up some rocks. But your speed might be at 70 max. But then how fast do you realy want to go with extra 100lb in the back and cars stoped on the road. Most bikes have a range of 150miles. Unless you have a bike that is made for touring like the BMW GS which would hold more gas. If i had a place that i know in advance that i want to get there and i dont need to carry anything else with me, a bike is the best option.
I live in LA so if anything would ever happen a tank would never get out. Even now we have gridlock every day on the freeway. A bike is the best option. Then we you get out just take everything you need from all the dead people that died from a heart attack carrying too much stuff to start with. Well thats what i hope for *L^ ...
