Oh man how do you guys choose which Spydies you want!

I think I am going to start making a bracket like for college basketball... Winners advance and the champion knife is the one I buy at that time.

I have a running list of knives I want and try to prioritize but I easily get sidetracked by good deals in the exchange.

Something about Spydercos with their lock-backs, Spyderhole, and pocket clip puts them inline to be full flat ground with a steel that holds an edge, and is easy to sharpen. My Para2 is as useful as paring knife in the kitchen.

It's tough to put my finger on it. It's just a matter of instinct or "feel" to me (I don't necessarily mean holding a given knife in my hand (although that could influence me too of course) but just a "feeling" I get about a given model). The moment I saw the Para2 I just liked how it looked and learning about further cemented my desire for it. Then when I did get it in hand it was a done deal... had to have it. But I do definitely buy most knives without ever holding them until the come out of the box (ie, most purchases are online).

What's funny is that sometimes what you think you like/don't like about a given model (or style of knife) changes once you actually give it a shot. For example... I used to not like backlocks (just didn't think the ergos were great or that operating them one handed was particularly easy). Well... after finally deciding to give a couple a shot I now really like them. The excellent lockup that they offer is hard to beat (if you've ever struggled with good lock up on a liner/frame lock or even a compression lock you know how refreshing it is to have a lockup that is just spot on without any fuss)... and operating one handed is actually quite easy. Conclusion... what I thought I didn't/wouldn't like it turned out to be something I actually do like... so the take away is... be open to things. You might find that your initial instinct or "feel" is just a misconception.

All that said... I still do most of my knife purchases/choices by instinct or "feel". :)

For me a lot of comes down to what was posted above. If not that hard to explain phenomenon, it usually is dictated by an unusual lock, interesting blade steel, or something that is very different. I will eventually get a Gayle Bradley and have had my eye on it for a while because of M4, but the overall knife would not call to me if it was not M4, so a few others that have called to me (Southard, Junior, Zulu, partly due to $90 price tag) have come before it. Now with some of the newer models being announced, the new full size Goddard being one and another from a different company which is very rare, the Gayle Bradley will probably be put on hold longer. For me everything is also dictated by a somewhat limited budget for spending on knives.
