Oh man, someone talk me out of a YCS

So I never really paid attention to the Yvsa Cherokee Special until today's DOTD (I think the diamond patterned and ornately carved handles kind of steered me away). I haven't even received my custom ordered M-43 yet and I'm so close to custom ordering a YCS.

Someone talk me out of it. Tell me the handle is too fat and uncomfortable. Tell me the awesome shape of the blade, with its beautifully swept back tip, is an optical illusion, and looks awful in person. Tell me that it chops as well as a Mora, and its two kardas are little more than butterknives!

Ok, so maybe instead of talking me out of it, I'm looking for a little enabling! Would anyone like to share their glowing reviews of the YCS? I'm looking for a thinner spine than the standard .5" that seem to be the norm recently. How does your YCS with a 3/8" spine hold up during chopping? Lastly, too fat a handle actually was a real concern -- any thoughts on this?

MooGoo,

I hope i didn't just sink you deeper with this.

My next snatch is gonna be the YCS with riveted Diamond patterned handle with a little carvings from RajKumar -wishful thinking.

But that's gonna be sometime later. With the only full tang kardas... YCS came to the top of MUST COP list.

As usual...SALIVATE

I'm sorry i didn't help much.

Damn you Jay -- damn you to hell! :D

Look at that belly! I can't believe I never noticed how incredibly perfect it's shaped for chopping. I can't tell you how many nights I couldn't go to sleep just thinking about an M-43. Now a paltry 2 weeks after ordering it and I'm lusting for another khuk. This doesn't bode well for the AK-47 I was planning on getting.

You are welcome :)

You meant the Kalashnikov or the Cold Steel's?

Wolf has something to show for scale.

I wonder the bigger bevels OR the wider the blade, chopping ability improves significantly as the BITE is deep.

Definitely the Kalishnikov. I'm hoping to just get a cheapy WASR 10, which i hear are 100 percent reliable and everything you expect of an AK as long as you make sure the front sight and gas tube aren't canted, and make sure mags fit and lock up well. I mean, every guy has to have an AK, right? :p

I LOVE Wolf's SCAK. In fact i'm hoping my M-43 replicates the dimensions of the SCAK reasonably well. I ordered it 20" with a spine between 5/16" and 3/8", wood handle with traditional ring and steel fittings. I also ordered it with a smaller handle (4.5" from buttcap to the bottom of the bolster) as i have smaller hands -- the longer handle on the SCAK is the only thing that keeps it from being absolute true perfection, at least to me and my tiny little baby hands.

There's diamond patterned and then there's Diamond Patterned :D

OK, ok, it's usual name is checkerboard ;)

OK. Here is a "review" for you:
The handle is soooo fat and unergonomic, the inserts will bleed you hand to shreds:thumbdn:
The actual blade shape is just a reflection of your car mirrors.:)
Other people will think you are carrying an shovel rather than a blade.:jerkit:
It chops as well as a pry bar would, actually a bit worse.:barf:
As for the kardas...they are just barely suitable for letter openers :grumpy:

That said I'm in LOVE with the design of the YCS.:D
Have been since I saw it the first time. Got one (en route), can't wait for it.
HIKV = YOU WILL HAVE YCS:thumbup:

Thanks mPsi, I envy you those. Especially the one there second from the left.
Like the wood and the pattern on that one the best of all the checkerboards.

As for another variant of the YCS, they also make them like this...

I'm getting the most EVIL idea into my mind for various "YCS hybrids": M-43s, AKs and ASTKs with YCS-style acoutrements... I need to get out more.

I for one would love to know Yvsa's opinion on how this model handles
(since it's his design) and if there's anything he would change in the design now.
Also there isn't much reviews around on this model...is everyone too scared to really use one?
Don't get me wrong...I understand WHY one would not want to spoil the beauty of this blade by using it.:D
But, the original design was made to BE a user khuk...or no?

Great blade shape on this one.

As for users, the one on the right of my photo of 4 is my "nice user", it was one of the last ones before the model took a brief vacation in 2001ish. Dan Fletcher went over it to smooth out some ripples in the blade, handle treatment (so it looks different now) and also made an awesome kydex sheath for it. People are always impressed by it even as a user, and then I have to tell them that I have 4 others that are nicer, cosmetically at least :D

Both of the YCS's I have owned were great choppers AND splitters. Even my 23oz model has tremendous impact due to the depth of the blade at the sweet spot.

But for all around use I think I like the Bonecutter, Foxy Folly, and Ganga Ram better.
