Oh my.....Has this ever happened to you with your folder?

I’m wondering how many of you have had a similar experience. I clipped my 1 week never used before folder in the cargo pocket of my BDU’s. Go out a few hours later. I felt a little poke- So I wonder if it was an insect. I pull off my BDU’s to discover a 4 inch slice in my pants (minimal blood) I check in the cargo pocket..... low and behold there is my folder...... open!!

I think I’m lucky but I’m wondering :

1) how often has this happened to others
2) what are you doing about it? I have thought about drilling into the handle of the knife and adding some kind of safety-Any thoughts. I figure it beats an elastic band-which defeats the expediency of a quick drawing tactical knife
3) should I send the knife back and get my money-this strikes me as extremely dangerous-I’m just not sure if it is commonplace-:grumpy:

Any input and I would be very grateful

Ya, it happens occasionally. What kind of knife was it? Assisted Opener? SuperCheapy? THey are the most prone to opening I would guess.

Oh yeah...my first benchmade (an early CQC-7) did this. I tightened the main pivot, but still loves to fly open! I carry an Emerson HD-7 now, and it has never freely opened in my pocket. However, due to unexpected openings and other issues, I have decieded to go fixed blade only. I have a small (Swamp Rat Shaker II) fixed blade coming to be my edc pocket knife.
Good luck if you modify!

What kind of folder was it? Can you change the clip so that the knife can be carried tip up or tip down? I prefer tip up, and clipped as far to the rear of the pocket, so the blade is pushed up close to the fabric. Of course not all knives can be carried this way, unless you customize the clip configuration. I personaly have never had a folder simply open up in my pocket.

Yep!
I've had three different knives open inside my pocket....a Spyderco Vesuvius, a Spyderco Salsa, and a CRKT Lightfoot Urban Shark.

The Vesuvius and the Salsa turned me against the Compression-lock, and the Urban Shark made me suspicious of liner-locks.

I've never had a lock-back open in my pocket, ever.

It has never happened to me but, I only carry a Lockback or slipjoint that snaps open & closed with authority. I suspect you were carring some type of assisted opener?

My father had a benchmade leopard open in his pants during movie. Needless to say the popcorn boy did not know what to do when dad came out of the movie with a four inch slash on his forearm.

Clipped to a cargo pocket it would be in a much wider range of motion, making something like this more likely. If possible, the front or back pocket would probably be safer.

I carry a Spyderco Delica 4 Wave in my right cargo pocket. It's never opened up on its own while in that pocket. It is a lockback though, with a strong bias towards closure.

Majority of my folders are in a belt sheath when I have them with me. I have a couple small folders that I clip in my back pocket or in a knife pocket on my hiking shorts. I never had a folder open in a pocket - yet.

My kershaw chive has opened in my slacks before, but I found out before it damaged anything. My BM5500 likes to open the tiniest bit, so 1mm of the tip is exposed (and sharp) I've cut myself reaching into my pocket and dragging my finger past this exposed tip.

I have thought about drilling into the handle of the knife and adding some kind of safety-Weety

Drill it and use a cable lock like on your guns... :o

:D Just kidding!!!!

Nope, never had any knife other than an old Benchmade auto accidently open in my pants, and I carry two Benchmade 705's in each of my thigh pockets when wearing BDU's...

To make sure that it won't open in your pocket again, Superglue it shut.:D.:D.

No it hasnt. if it did I would not keep that knife. sell it off so someone else can cut his leg up!

No, never, not even with a Spec Bump that I usually don't use the safty on.

1) Never. Not in 46 years that I've carried knives. Only use lockbacks and slipjoints. Can't comment on other locks.
2) See if I could adjust the tension so that it would stay closed.
3) If one opened and could not adjust it, I would trash it if old, or return it to the mfg for replacement if it were new. Having one open up unexpectedly is unacceptable.

What kind of knife was this?

I have never had such an experience, and I routinely keep knives employing various locking mechanisms clipped to my cargo pockets.
