The wacko crazy Viking Owl :D has poised a question on the gut hook bevel . Should I have the bevel on both sides of the hook ? How important is it ? Right now I only have it on the one side , should I change this ?

Thank you for all for any help .

thats how i sharpened the 2 knives i made with a gut hook but thats how the customer wanted it sharpened. i would go with whatever looks good or works the best.

thanks for the reply Richard . Hope to get some other reply's . Customer would like to get it by August for bow season here so I would like to get a head start . I hate last minute rush .

Assuming the depth (?) of the bevel stays the same, the single would be sharper. Other than that, I doubt it makes much difference. As usual, I don't really know, I'm just thinking out loud. :foot:

Your pal, the wacko crazy Viking Owl.

:D

Just my 2 cents but I would think that sharpened on both sides, it will tend to be easier to guide I would think. One side is the chisel effect and it will tend to one to gouge in or pull to one side!

I have only done a few of the guthooks, which was sharpened on both sides. I have had a couple of guys who do a lot of hog hunting tell me they had tried some factory ones that were chisel type and that they had problems with them. They both stated that they had better luck with the ones that were sharpened on both sides.

Thanks Walt , user's experience is what I am looking for . The customer is in Alaska fishing and I cannot ask him his choice . I'm on my own .
