Oh no! Not ANOTHER knife...

So, like an idiot, I just couldn't stop at 600. I had to keep on polishing away at 1500.

I just like shiny stuff. What can I say?

Got one more side to do, maybe even finish it today, then mask it all up and get going on the rest of the stuff. Probably won't send it away for heating this week:rolleyes:

I'm thinkin that might be achievable once the blade's hard. Or maybe not. I really do not know what I am doing.:)

Lol. Cracks me up. I am imagine that getting the mirror finish will be a lot of work, both in time and and actual force needed. Probably worth while contacting somebody else who has done it before even thinking about it lol.

so the blade is now pretty much done til after heat treatment, so now it's finishing up the spine, the swedge, the tang and finally the ricasso.

I almost got done the tang tonight, and I really hope to get the swedge and ricasso finished tomorrow:thumbup:.

Pretty symmetrical so far...

Lots of detail work to do to the tang. Don't want any stress risers on my 'little stick':p.

I use a little triangular file to work on the smaller areas. It works good because it's nice and stiff.

Gettin er cleaned up here.

Waste not, want not. I'm not cheap, I'm thrifty! These bits totally come in handy for the detailed, small areas so I never throw out sandpaper til it's completely used up. At about $1.50 per sheet it's not expensive. But it ain't free neither.

Nice polish on the spine. Really helps with aim when you can see the spine of the blade easily. Although last night I handily pruned a trail which I use to get to work and I couldn't see a thing, so, uh... well you know what they say about theories...

Looking good like always. I have to get mine sanded and really for HT this weekend, pretty much no excuse. That and maybe make a kiridashi since I will have a sliver of micarta left over.

here are a few shitty photos of the swedge, eventually brought to 1500 grit.

I'd done a little work on the ricasso earlier. Think I brought it to 220 grit or something. Here I am after cleaning the schmutz off it and about to get going on 320 grit

Dunno what grit I have going on here.

man, my camera is such a piece of shit. 2 megapixels. Whoopee.

The shank is about ready to send off for heat treatment now. Guess she'll go out next week. Stay tuned though, I have a few more pics I'll post later this evening:)

wow.. great thread Lorien... looking forward to seeing it all finished..:)

love that Mtn. biking shot too man.. though they don't compare to your area, we have a lot of nice trails around here..:D

Looking good mate.

How you've resisted the temptation to get your belt grinder in action on this project I'll never know!

One things for sure, no one can accuse you of not 'paying your dues' by doing it the hard way to start with.;):D

Nice work.

Ian

thanks very much guys:)

I'm a little apprehensive of the heat treating, especially after all this work.
Although I'll only work on this knife up to maybe two hours at a time, (if I'm lucky) there are many many hours of knotted and sore muscles devoted to making this knife so far.

A received a very special birthday present from a very good friend, and mentor to me in my need to learn more about custom knives, and it has been extremely helpful in crystallizing my resolve to learn how to make knives.
Here is a link to it; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=627488

I brought the handle materials to work today and if I get a chance I'll take some more photos. If I can get everything nailed down that I want nailed down today, then the shank will be sent to Bos for HT on Monday:thumbup:

The book looks good, photos/knives are amazing at the least.

Can't wait to see the finished piece. Will no doubt be great.
