Just fired up that enco bandsaw that was on sale......other than it being a bit of a beast to carry through my apartment, setup was smooooooooth. I quickly burned out whatever P.O.S. blade it came with. Feeling disappointed, I threw in the expensive bi-metal one I bought.....and the skies opened....if I had full comprehension of the time I would have saved buying one before, I would have.....I profiled out a big blade in 10% of the time than I previously would have spent...I will be making a good deal more knives because as a part-time maker, a great amount of my time and effort was spent with a hacksaw and burning up belts in the early shaping stages. What a weight off my shoulders.....

Which saw did you get?

Ironically, I just got a new Enco flyer in the mail yesterday. Did you buy the saw shown on the cover page? If so, Dayummm! That's one heck of a saw, and pretty expensive.

I think its the one they have for 179.99 or something. Its the standard cheap one lots of people have and you see everywhere. horizontal/vertical. I locked mine upright and took off the horizontal accessories and I sit on the table like a bench....seems to work like a charm. It will be so nice to be able to make 2 knives at once without dedicating an entire day(part time maker definition) to profiling them out through hacksaw and grinding.

I just cleaned up the shop, got a new order of belts, completed an order, and now have 10 feet of 1095 and a big box of handle materials to get crackin' on!

replace the the work table with a 1/4" piece of steel. It's very simple to do. Cut it to size, drill the holes for a pass through screw or two, recess the screws, cut the slot and replace the flimsy work table. It makes a big difference and will drop the noise quite a bit also. you can get a small piece of mild steel at the home store of good hardware store..

Yeah that table has to go ASAP. I will be replacing it with something once I get a hunk of steel....
