I did the same to a Remington Muskrat - and donated the parts to a knifemaker!! I watched a technician at Queen try the same thing on an expensive Cattle knife; and snap it into 3 pieces!! They gave me a new knife!! If the tempering wasn't just right, there never was any hope!!

Yes sir, it happens sometimes. I've straightened other blades with no problem (even one other Nontron). Something in the area of that deep Nontron blade stamp compromised steel integrity on this one apparently.
... well that and maybe a little too much mallet LOL

EDIT: First one I've ever damaged or broken while trying to center
