Oil AND water quench?

Not talking about an interrupted quench, but something I read made me want to ask. It was a book talking about swords and their historical progress. One of the things mentioned was a method of quench using a layer of oil over water, both of which were heated. Have any of you tried this or still do it? Obviously it depends on what steel you may be using. I just wondered if anyone has tried it and if there was any significant difference than what you normally do.

I tried it. I spent nearly 3 years futzing around with water. I tried things like 3 seconds in water, then swooping it into oil... I even tried the oil over water thing. I really never saw much point in it.

I have gone to Park #50 and not looked back. Of course you have to give your right nut for Park #50 now, so maybe Houghton products are the way to go. Either way, I wouldn't recommend the oil/water thing myself.

However, I sure wouldn't discourage you from trying it yourself to see how YOU like it. :)
